Box Score 2 WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel took the deciding set 15-7 to notch a 3-2 Centennial Conference (CC) victory over Swarthmore en route to a 2-0 day in a home volleyball trimatch on Saturday.
The Green Terror (14-6, 4-2 CC) handed the Garnet (16-4, 6-1 CC) its first conference loss of the season and ended its streak at 15 consecutive victories. McDaniel capped the day with a 3-0 win over Lebanon Valley.
Against Swarthmore, Kloe Martin (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) knocked down 20 kills and added 25 digs to reach 1,000 digs for her career and become just the third player in program history to join the 1,000-kill, 1,000-dig club. She added 10 more kills and seven more digs against the Dutchmen.
Tied at 6-all in the first set, a Maddie Moyer (Brookeville, Md./Sherwood) kill started an 8-1 run that opened up a 14-7 advantage en route to a 25-17 victory.
Swarthmore built a 14-8 lead in the second set before back-to-back Caroline Savin (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) kills capped an 8-2 counter that evened the set.
An Olivia Leventhal kill and Madison Heppe ace gave the Garnet a 23-20 lead en route to a 25-21 win.
Swarthmore battled back in the third set to make it a 24-23 score but Martin knocked down a kill out of a timeout to give the hosts a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Garnet raced out to a 12-5 lead in the fourth set, ultimately forcing a fifth set by a 25-15 margin.
Tied at 3-all in the deciding set, Martin knocked down three kills in four points to open a 6-4 lead. Kills from Teryn Rath (Grass Valley, Calif./Bear River) and Allie Lugar (Wilmington, Del./Dupont) keyed another four straight points to stretch the lead to 10-4.
Martin finished the 15-7 win with a solo block.
Madeline Rose (Soddy Daisy, Tenn./Baylor School) and Rath chipped in 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Taylor Bauman (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) steadied the defense with 36 digs – the most in a single match by a Green Terror player since 2006.
Sarah Wallace led Swarthmore with 20 kills and 18 digs.
Tied at 25-all in the first set with Lebanon Valley (14-8), a ball-handling error and Savin kill gave McDaniel a 27-25 win.
The Green Terror carried that momentum into the rest of the match, completing the sweep with wins of 25-13 and 25-17.
Martin, Rose and Rath had 10 kills each while Bauman steadied the defense with 15 digs. Savin added six kills and five total blocks.
McDaniel returns to action at Gettysburg on Wednesday. Match time is 7 p.m.
