Wingerd records double-double in victory

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – McDaniel built a 16-point lead at halftime en route to a 77-63 win over Ursinus in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Saturday.

Emma Wingerd (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) led the Green Terror (15-1, 9-1 CC) with season highs of 14 points and 13 rebounds for her 14th career double-double. Steph Perez (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) finished with 10 points, including hitting a pair of 3-pointers to give 200 for her career to become just the sixth player in conference history to hit that mark.

Jessica Porada led the Bears (6-10, 5-5 CC) with 18 points while Alyssa Polimini added 15.

After Polimeni scored right off the opening tip, Perez canned a 3-pointer and Lindsey Nichols (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) added a jumper to stake McDaniel to a 5-2 lead just 1:31 into the game.

A Porada jumper closed the deficit to 7-6 nearly a minute later before Alyssa March (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Porada exchanged baskets to keep it a one-point game.

Jasmine Smith (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) hit the second of three free throws with 14:27 showing to spark a 12-2 run over the next 4:45 to open up a 13-point lead.

A Porada jumper with 6:56 to play closed the deficit to 25-16 before a Wingerd layup and triples from Brittney Davis (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) and Smith expanded the lead to 17.

Two Wingerd free throws made it a 36-18 game before Porada cut the deficit to 16 at the break.

A Caroline Shimrock 3-pointer with 18:28 to play in the second half ignited a 7-0 burst that forced a Green Terror timeout just 69 seconds later.

Out of the timeout, March converted a turnaround layup to halt the run before the teams traded baskets until a Sarah Bach (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) and Nichols 3-pointer on back-to-back possessions made it a 57-37 game with 12:13 showing.

Four straight points from Polimeni, an Allie Cook putback and Porada layup closed the deficit to 57-45 just 2:01 later.

The lead swelled as large as 23 on two Perez free throws with 6:15 showing en route to the 14-point win.

Smith reached double figures for the first time in her career, finishing with 11 points while Nichols made it double figures in all 15 games this season with 14 points. March rounded out double-digit scorers with 10 points.

Davis handed out six assists while Wingerd added four.

The Green Terror returns to action at Johns Hopkins on Tuesday. Game time is 6 p.m.
