Box Score COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus rallied from a 15-point deficit early in the second half to force overtime and topple McDaniel 58-50 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action on Saturday.
Wes Brooks (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) led the Green Terror (11-5, 6-4 CC) with 12 points.
Malik Draper paced the Bears (6-11, 3-7 CC) with 17 points while Matt Knowles added 13.
A Draper three-point play off the tip in overtime immediately staked Ursinus to a 47-44 advantage.
Remi Janicot stretched the lead to five before two Knowles free throws gave the hosts a 51-44 lead with 3:07 remaining.
A Brooks steal and dish to Jack Rauchut (Warminster, Md./William Tennant) closed the deficit to 54-49 with 1:06 showing in overtime but that's as close as the Green Terror would get.
Tied at 5-all, Duane Echols (Jessup, Md./Hammond) hit the second of two free throws and Nic Martin (Hagerstown, Md./St. Martia Goretti) hit a 10-foot runner in the lane for a three-point lead with 12:36 to play in the opening half.
Two Matthew Alden free throws closed the deficit to one before Brooks canned a triple in the corner to stretch the lead to 11-7 with 10:50 on the clock.
A Tim Stewart (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) tip-in pushed the lead to six just over a minute later before Joseph LaStracco responded with a layup on the other end.
An Echols layup and Brooks triple stretched the advantage to 18-9 with 7:54 on the clock.
Four straight points from Martin stretched the lead to 23-13 with 1:54 showing en route to a 25-16 advantage at the intermission.
Brooks' third 3-pointer of the game capped a 6-0 start to the second half and gave McDaniel a 31-16 lead, forcing an Ursinus timeout with 17:21 to play in the second half.
Three treys keyed a 13-0 run that closed the deficit to 31-29 with 12:27 remaining.
Draper hit two of three free-throw attempts to draw the hosts even at 31-all with 11:09 on the clock.
An Andrew Merlo (Rehoboth, Del./Cape Henlopen) free throw snapped a 7-minute, 15-second scoreless drought and put the Green Terror back in front, 32-31.
A LoStrecco three-point play gave the Bears their first lead of the game at 34-32 with 9:17 to play.
Echols responded 28 seconds later, hitting a runner in the lane to snap an 0-for-9 stretch from the floor and give McDaniel its first field goal in more than nine minutes, knotting the game at 34-all.
A Brooks triple from the wing with 7:06 on the clock put the visitors up 37-34.
Two Knowles free throws on the other end once again closed the deficit to one and a LoStrecco layup put Ursinus back in front by one.
Two Cameron Royster (Derwood, Md./Magruder) free throws with 5:19 showing once again gave McDaniel a one-point edge before a Stewart three-point play made it a 42-38 game with 4:10 remaining.
Two Janicot free throws with 1:12 to play closed the margin to 44-42.
Out of an inbounds play with 17.6 seconds left, Matt Knowles drove the baseline and hit a layup with 8.3 seconds to play, drawing the foul in the process. He missed the ensuing free throw and the Green Terror could not convert at the other end to send the game to overtime.
Royster finished with 10 points, three assists and three steals.
The Green Terror returns to action at Johns Hopkins on Tuesday. Game time is 8 p.m.
