Donovan fall wins match

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Each team won five bouts but a final pin at heavyweight gave McDaniel a 23-17 win over Johns Hopkins in the Centennial Conference (CC) wrestling opener for both teams on Wednesday.

With the match tied at 17-all going to the final bout, Robb Donovan (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) trailed 5-3 heading to the second period. After Ellis Flannery earned an escape at the boundary with 45 seconds remaining in the period, Donovan earned a takedown shortly after the restart and with 23 seconds remaining in the period gave the Green Terror (5-4, 1-0 CC) the victory with a 4-minute, 37-second fall – the freshman's first collegiate victory.

Paul Bewak led the Blue Jays (1-9, 0-1 CC) with a 10-2 win at 125. The No. 4-ranked wrestler took a 6-2 lead after the first period before staking the guests to a 4-0 lead with a takedown and advantage time in the final 10 seconds of the third period.

Evan Krumheuer had 1 minute, 3 seconds of advantage time at the end of his 133 match to double the score with a 13-5 win.

Alvontae Drummond (Lincoln, Del./Milford) cut the deficit in half with a 17-8 victory at 141 before Trey Mitchell (Lewes, Del./Caesar Rodney) gave the hosts a 10-8 lead with a 2-minute, 8-second pin at 149.

A Christian Salera reversal and near fall to start the second period put the Blue Jays back in front with a 5-0 win at 157.

Luke Yox (Westminster, Md./Liberty) earned a 8-0 win at 165 with more than four minutes of advantage time to turn a one-point deficit into a 14-11 lead.

At 174, Jared Forman got an escape with 32 seconds remaining in the third period to even the match at 11-all. Facing a 1-minute, 33-second disadvantage in advantage time, Forman got the takedown he needed and added a near fall in the final 25 seconds for a 16-12 win to even the match at 14-all.

Evan Johnson gave Johns Hopkins a 17-14 advantage, earning a 5-2 victory at 184.

Nick Cross (Centreville, Md./Queen Annes County) notched a 7-1 win at 197 to even the match at 17-all and make heavyweight a winner-take-all bout.
