Box Score WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel opened up a 13-2 lead just 4:45 into the game en route to a 75-57 victory over Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action on Tuesday.
Tim Stewart (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) led three players in double figures for the Green Terror (9-4, 4-3 CC) with 15 points. Wes Brooks (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) added 14 points, going 4-for-4 from 3-point range, while Nick Perugino (Lewes, Del./Salesianum) added 13 off the bench.
Zack Yonda led the Garnet (6-8, 2-5 CC) with 18 points while Chris Bourne added 15.
Brooks canned a pair of triples, including directly off an inbounds pass with one second on the shot clock, to stake McDaniel to a 6-0 lead in the game's first 73 seconds.
Yonda got Swarthmore on the board with 17:59 to play before Andrew Merlo (Rehoboth, Del./Cape Henlopen) drained a 3-pointer with 16:25 showing for a 9-2 lead.
Layups from Phillip Perry (Crownsville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) and Cameron Royster (Derwood, Md./Magruder) pushed the lead to 13-2.
The lead oscillated between nine and 11 points until a third Brooks 3-pointer and Perry layup gave the Green Terror a 24-10 lead with 8:23 showing.
A Stewart three-point play pushed the lead advantage to 15 a minute later.
The lead grew as large as 37-16 on a Perugino 3-pointer with 2:07 on the clock.
Nic Martin (Hagerstown, Md./St. Maria Gorretti) capped a 7-for-9 showing from long range in the first half with a triple in the final five seconds for a 42-22 halftime advantage.
Trailing 55-34, Swarthmore went on a 11-2 run to close the margin to 12 but four points from Stewart keyed a 12-1 counter that pushed the lead to its largest at 69-46 with 5:23 to play.
Merlo added four assists to his three points while Royster, Martin and Perugino all handed three helpers.
McDaniel returns to action at home against No. 10 Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. Game time is 2 p.m.
