Stewart nets 20 in Curley's 100th win

Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel built a 20-point lead at halftime that was never challenged in the second half to notch a 73-52 win over Ursinus in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action on Saturday.

Tim Stewart (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) led four players in double figures for the Green Terror (5-2, 2-2 CC), who maintained a lead of no fewer than 18 points over the game's final 22 minutes.

The victory marked the 100th in the eight-year coaching career of Kevin Curley. The mentor is now 100-89, becoming the fourth coach in program history to reach the milestone and the first to achieve the mark with a winning record.

Matt Knowles led the Bears (0-7, 0-4 CC) with 17 points while Remi Janicot and Malik Draper added 10 each.

A Janicot free throw and Joseph LoStracco layup staked Ursinus to a 3-0 lead before Wes Brooks (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and Phillip Perry (Crownsville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) each hit a bucket for a 4-3 lead with 16:36 to play in the opening half.

A Draper layup put the Bears back in front by one before Stewart hit two free throws with 15:56 on the clock to give the hosts the lead for good.

Clining to a 15-12 lead after two Janicot free throws with 10:03 showing, Andrew Merlo (Rehoboth, Del./Cape Henlopen) responded with a jumper 24 seconds later to spark a 17-2 run over the next 3:38.

Five different Green Terror players contributed points during the run.

A Stewart layup gave the hosts a 42-21 lead before two Brooks free throws stretched the lead to 23.

Knowles capped a triple from the right wing at the buzzer to return the deficit to 20.

A Duane Echols (Jessup, Md./Hammond) 3-pointer gave McDaniel its largest lead of the game at 61-32 with 12:30 to play.

After a Nick Perugino (Lewes, Del./Salesianum) 3-pointer made it a 65-36 game with 9:43 to play, Knowles hit a layup to spark an 11-0 stretch that closed the deficit to 18 but the Bears could get no closer.

Cameron Royster (Derwood, Md./Magruder) finished with 13 points while Perry added 11 and Perugino chipped in 10. Stewart added eight rebounds while Perry and Brooks had three steals each.

McDaniel returns to action at Lebanon Valley on Sunday, Dec. 14. Game time is 3 p.m.
