COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Jake Pooton (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) went 5-2 with three pins to finish fourth at 184 and lead McDaniel at the Ursinus Fall Brawl in wrestling action on Saturday.
Pooton was one of three Green Terror wrestlers to place fourth at the non-scoring meet.
After receiving a bye in the opening round, Pooton dropped a 3-1 decision to Elizabethtown's Luke Fernandez to fall to the consolation bracket. His first match there was a 19-second pin of teammate Dominic States before he notched his second sub-1 minute fall, pinning Harun Omerhodzi (Franklin & Marshall) in 47 seconds.
He added a 3-1 decision and 11-1 win to advance to the consolation semifinals, where he pinned Dan Wojtaszak (College of New Jersey) in 2:51.
Delaware Valley's Connor Gabriel edged Pooton in the third-place bout, 3-2.
Bryce Pappas (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) made it two freshmen with fourth-place finishes, going 4-2 at 174.
Pappas also received a bye in the opening round before topping Delaware Valley's Chris Yocum 6-2. Top seed and eventually champion Joshua Lopez (Liberty) relegated Pappas to the consolation bracket with a 9-1 win in the quarterfinals.
Pappas notched wins of 12-2, 13-6 and 15-3 to make his way back to the third-place match, where he fell 3-1 to Joshua Ferenczy (Liberty).
Luke Yox (Westminster, Md./Liberty), who also opened with a bye, dropped 6-2 decision to Adam Keating (Navy) in his first match.
Yox notched a 54-second fall of Kyree Jones (West Chester) before topping his teammate Colton Smith (Stevensonville, Md./Kent Island), 5-2. Smith dropped his first match 10-8 before winning his first bout in the consolation bracket by fall over Sean Kelly (Muhlenberg) in 3:54.
Yox continued with wins of 7-6 and 6-4 before earning a medical forfeit win to advance to the third-place match, where he fell 7-4 to Derek Arnold (Ursinus).
Taylor Avino (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) went 4-2 with three pins at heavyweight. His day started with a 5-mintue, 21-second fall of Sam Weinger (RIT) before dropping to the consolation bracket after being pinned by Evan Canaday (Liberty) in the first period.
Avino notched a 4-0 win over Joey Bragg (Gettysburg) before recording back-to-back first-period falls. His day ended two bouts short of the third-place match with a 3-minute, 48-second fall by Pat Schnider (College of New Jersey), who finished third on the day.
The Green Terror returns to action at home for the Green Terror Duals on Saturday, Nov. 22.
