Stewart paces way with 11 in win

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel used a big second half to turn a three-point halftime deficit into a 56-44 victory over Washington (Md.) in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action on Tuesday.

Tim Stewart (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) led the Green Terror (3-1, 1-1 CC) with 11 points while Nick Perugino (Lewes, Del./Salesianum) added nine off the bench.

John Weston led the Shoremen (0-4, 0-1 CC) with 15 points while Dave Knox contributed a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Trailing 30-26 on two Joey Shelton free throws, Cameron Royster (Derwood, Md./Magruder) responded with a pair of free throws with 14:40 showing to close the deficit to two.

Back-to-back triples from Wes Brooks (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and Andrew Merlo (Rehoboth, Del./Cape Henlopen) gave McDaniel its first lead since 14:04 remained in the first half.

A James Drury free throw and Sean Flanigan jumper closed the margin to 34-33 with 12:33 showing before back-to-back Perugino 3-pointers stretched the lead to seven.

Five straight points from Weston once again made it a two-point game with 7:31 to play but Brooks canned a triple in the corner to push the lead back to 43-38.

Weston made it a 48-42 game with 1:21 to play but the Green Terror went 6-for-7 from the free-throw line in the final minute to secure the 12-point win.

Four points from Stewart keyed an 8-2 start through the first 4:15 of the game before a Dave Knox putback sparked a 13-0 run that put Washington in front 15-8 with 10:41 to play in the opening half.

Pat Morgan made it a 24-18 game with 3:24 showing before a Royster three-point play with 1:50 remaining made it a 24-21 margin at the intermission.

Royster finished with nine points and eight rebounds while Duane Echols (Jessup, Md./Hammond) added seven points. Brooks added six points and eight rebounds.

McDaniel returns to action at home against Lehman on Sunday. Game time is 2 p.m.
