Box Score WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel scored the first 20 points of the second half to turn a 32-30 edge into a 22-point margin en route to a 74-59 victory over Mount St. Vincent in the championship game of the 2014 McDaniel Tipoff Tournament in women's basketball action on Sunday.
Lindsey Nichols (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) led the Green Terror (2-0) with a career-best 25 points while adding 11 rebounds for her first collegiate double-double. Steph Perez (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) chipped in 14 points to finish the day with 1,001 career points and become the 15th player in program history to reach the milestone. The duo earned spots on the all-tournament team for their play.
Brittany Carroll led the Dolphins (1-1) with 23 points while Kelly Fraser added 10 points and 19 rebounds to earn a spot on the all-tournament team.
Keyed by six points from Perez, McDaniel jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the game's first 1:38.
The Green Terror extended the advantage to 15-2 on a Lauren Legler (Stone Harbor, N.J./Middle Township) jumper with 12:49 showing in the first half before Mount St. Vincent worked its way back into the game.
Eight points from Carroll keyed a 12-3 run that closed the deficit to 18-14 with 8:00 on the clock.
Emma Wingerd (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) made it a 32-26 game but Fraser and Carroll each hit layups in the final minute to make it a two-point game at the intermission.
Nichols netted 14 points, including six straight to open the half, during the Green Terror's 20-0 game-clinching run that made it a 52-30 game with 13:36 to play.
Theresa Carey snapped the long scoring drought, hitting an elbow jumper with 13:13 on the clock before Christina Barone closed the deficit to 52-34 before Perez hit a jumper to give her career points 998 and 999 with 12:11 showing.
Two Karli Zeps (Reisterstown, Md./Seton Keough) free throws with 8:45 remaining extended the lead to its largest at 61-36.
With 4:22 to play, Nichols passed from the left elbow to Perez and the right elbow and the senior swished the jumper to join the elite 1,000-point club, reestablishing a 20-point lead in the process.
Four straight points from Barone and five consecutive from Carroll closed the deficit to 68-57 just 61 seconds later but the visitors would get no closer.
Zeps finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. Wingerd added eight points, 10 rebounds and four steals.
Brittney Davis (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) chipped in five assists while Perez dished out four helpers and Nichols swiped four steals.
McDaniel opens Centennial Conference play at Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
