Nichols nets 19 in season-opening win

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel went on a 14-2 run early in the first half and never looked back en route to a 79-47 victory over Penn State-Harrisburg in the opening round of the 2014 McDaniel Tipoff Tournament in season-opening women's basketball action on Saturday.

Lindsey Nichols (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) netted 14 of her career-high 19 points after halftime to lead the Green Terror (1-0), who will face Mount St. Vincent in Sunday's championship game. The Dolphins defeated Alvernia 56-55 in the day's other first-round game.

Kaitlyn Carmo led the Lions (0-1) with 11 points while Janel Brown also chipped in 11 off the bench.

After Jasmine Yanich responded to a Karli Zeps (Reisterstown, Md./Seton Keough) layup with a 3-pointer for a 3-2 lead 65 seconds into the game, Nichols hit a second-chance layup to put the hosts in front for good.

An Emma Wingerd (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) steal-and-layup stretched the lead to 7-3 before a Yancih fastbreak layup closed the deficit to two once again with 17:18 to play.

Steph Perez (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) contributed five of the game's next nine points to stretch the lead to double digits for the first time with 12:55 showing.

The Green Terror methodically increased the first-half lead to as large as 27 points before Brown hit a 3-pointer in the final 47 seconds of the half to make it a 44-20 game at the break.

Behind a pair of Nichols' triples, McDaniel netted the first 16 points of the second half to push the lead to 40 with 16:09 showing.

The lead grew as large as 46 at 74-28 with 9:26 to play before back-to-back Carmo layups made it a 74-32 game.

Nichols hit a layup with 8:08 to play for a 76-32 lead en route to the 32-point win.

Perez finished with 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals while Zeps added 12 points and four steals. As a team, the Green Terror had 26 steals and forced 41 Penn State-Harrisburg turnovers.

Brittney Davis (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) finished with seven points and five assists.

Game time on Sunday is 4 p.m.
