GRANTHAM, Pa. – Ryan O'Boyle (North Reading, Mass./Central Catholic) went 4-0 with three pins to win the 133-pound weight class and lead McDaniel at the Messiah Invitational in season-opening wrestling action on Saturday.
The Green Terror finished fourth at the eight-team invitational with 71.5 points. In addition to O'Boyle, four other individuals placed in the top four at their respective weight classes.
O'Boyle's day opened a 1-minute, 43-second pin of Ursinus' Scott Baker before he notched back-to-back sub-1 minute falls to advance to the title tilt. O'Boyle defeated Jacob Spearman of Washington & Jefferson 3-0 in the championship match.
Alvontae Drummond (Lincoln, Del./Milford) and Marcos Mercado (Northampton, Mass./Hyde School Woodstock) were both placewinners at 141.
Drummond went 3-1 to finish second while Mercado was 3-2 to place fourth.
Drummond opened his day with a bye before notching a 24-8 technical fall and 9-5 decision to reach the semifinals.
Mercado notched 9-2 and 15-8 wins before falling to Drummond 4-3 in the semifinal.
Drummond was pinned by top-seeded Kaleb Loht early in the second period to finish second.
Mercado notched a 21-second pin of Chad Lammer before falling 18-7 in the third-place bout.
Luke Yox (Westminster, Md./Liberty) opened his day at 157 with an 8-4 win over Tag Wilbur (Messiah) before notching a 14-4 win. Yox dropped a 10-2 decision in the semifinals to fall to the consolation bracket, where he recorded a 12-4 win before falling 3-2 in the third-place match.
Jake Pooton (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) rounded out the top-four finishers, placing fourth at 184. After starting with a bye, he advanced to the semifinals with a 7-4 win over Liberty's Alex Cox. After falling 9-3 to eventual champion Keyshaun Ward (Liberty), Pooton made his way into the third-place match with an 8-6 win. He fell 15-6 to Jeremy Bailes, the second seed from Messiah.
Bryce Pappas (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) went 3-2 at 174, winning by technical fall (16-0) and pin (1:48) in the championship bracket. After dropping a 2-1 decision, Pappas notched a 10-2 win in the consolation bracket to pick up his third win of the day.
The Green Terror returns to action at the Ursinus Fall Brawl on Saturday. Action begins at 10 a.m.
