McMaster's putback opens 2014 with win

TAKOMA PARK, Md. – McDaniel saw a nine-point second-half lead evaporate before Codi McMaster (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) notched her only field goal of the night, putting back a missed jumper to break a 56-all deadlock in the final second and lift McDaniel to a 58-56 non-conference women's basketball victory at Washington Adventist on Saturday.

Lauren Ballenger (Silver Spring, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) led the Green Terror (7-3) with 11 points while Steph Perez (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) added 10 points, including draining a triple to beat the first-half buzzer and cap an 18-3 run over the final 4:50 of the stanza that turned a nine-point deficit into a 35-29 halftime edge.

Rashawnda Carter led the Shock (4-9) with 18 points while Nicole Derrickson added 12 point and Courtney Cayard had 11.

An Alyssa March (Fallston, Md./Fallston) jumper gave McDaniel a 51-42 lead with 9:44 to play in the second half before Cayard and Carter each hit layups to cut the deficit to five with 6:20 on the clock.

One Perez free throw made it a 56-49 advantage with 2:04 to play before a Carter three-point play on the next Washington Adventist possession trimmed the deficit to four.

A jumper from Derrikson made it a two-point game with 41 seconds left before a Re'gene Watson putback knotted the game with 13 ticks remaining.

Derrickson blocked a Perez jumper but McMaster corralled the rebound and put it back for the victory.

Tied at 9-all after a back-and-forth first nine minutes, Derrickson hit two free throws with 10:42 to play in the first half to ignite a 9-2 burst that put the Shock in front 18-11 with 8:39 showing.

Five points from Emma Wingerd (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) closed the deficit to 20-16 before Washington Adventist tallied six of the game's next seven points to take a 26-17 lead with 4:50 remaining.

Two March free throws started the end-of-half rally with 4:33 on the clock.

Perez contributed seven of her points during the run while Brittney Davis (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) had five of her eight points.

Five points from Derrickson keyed a 7-0 start to the second half that gave the hosts a one-point edge with 18:26 showing before Ballenger hit a layup to started a 14-4 run.

Davis added five assists to her eight points. McMaster had a game-high nine rebounds to go with her three points.

The Green Terror returns to Centennial Conference play at home against Muhlenberg on Wednesday. Game time is 6 p.m.
