Calderon notches first-half tally

Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. – A first-half goal was all McDaniel would need en route to a 2-0 non-conference men's soccer win over Goucher on Tuesday.

Luis Calderon (Silver Spring, Md./Bullis) scored in the first half for the Green Terror (3-0), who recorded 20 shots but was thwarted on many close-range opportunities.

Ethan DeBandi made four saves for the Gophers (3-1), who also had defenders stepping in front of shots within the six-yard box to stop near-certain goals.

In the 31st minute, Edgar Escobar (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) played a ball through the defense that Calderon collected, tapped by his defender then juked the keeper into the far side of the net for a 1-0 lead.

That lead would hold up until a corner kick in the 79th minute. Escobar put a ball into the box that was redirected. In an attempt to clear the shot, a Goucher defender reversed the ball into his own net to make it 2-0.

Zaah Nibbelink (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) made four saves in goal for McDaniel, which also got a back save from Raymond Boly (Gaithersburg, Md./Northwest) on a rebound off a Nibbelink save.

The Green Terror finished with a 20-12 advantage in shots.

McDaniel returns to action at home against Frostburg on Saturday. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
