Box Score CHESTERTOWN, Md. – McDaniel built a 13-point lead before needing a late rally to defeat Washington (Md.) 57-53 in Centennial Conference men's basketball action on Tuesday.
Wesley Brooks (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and Phillip Perry (Crownsville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) led the Green Terror (2-2, 1-1 CC) with 13 points apiece.
Stephen Poarch paced the Shoremen (1-3, 1-1 CC) with 16 points – one of three starters to reach double figures.
Knotted at 45-all, Brooks hit a 3-pointer with 6:34 on the clock to spark a 7-0 run over the next 2:20.
Pat Morgan hit a triple 18 seconds later to make it a 52-48 game before neither team registered a point for the next two minutes.
Poarch hit a pair of free throws 15 seconds apart to close the deficit to two with 1:38 showing but the Green Terror went 5-for-6 from the charity stripe in the final 27 seconds to seal the win.
Tied at 4-all, Washington scored seven of the game's next nine point to open up an 11-6 advantage with 15:11 remaining in the first half.
Six points from Evan Pupelis (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) keyed an 8-0 counterburst over the next 2 minutes, 47 seconds to take a 14-11 edge.
A Perry layup extended the advantage to 17-13.
A Poarch fastbreak layup evened the game at 21-all with 6:06 showing before Brooks converted a jumper and was fouled on a 3-pointer and hit two of the three ensuing free-throw attempts with 4:30 on the clock.
Baskets from Perry and Pupelis extended the run to 8-0 to build a 29-21 lead with 2:59 showing in the first half en route to a 33-23 lead at the break.
Two Perry free throws gave the Green Terror a 40-27 lead with 14:37 remaining before the Shoremen reeled off 11 of the game's next 14 points to close to within five nearly five and a half minutes later. Sean Flanigan capped the stretch with five straight points.
After Jimmy Cranwell (Brick, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) hit two free throws with 8:14 showing momentarily extended the lead back to seven, Morgan countered with two free throws of his own and a 3-pointer before John Weston converted on the break to knot the game.
Duane Echols (Jessup, Md./Hammond) and Pupelis rounded out double figure scorers for McDaniel with 11 and 10, respectively.
The Green Terror returns to action at home against Eastern on Sunday. Game time is 4 p.m.
