Brooks scores 12 to lead way in late surge to victory

WINCHESTER, Va. – McDaniel scored 15 of the last 21 points to defeat Methodist 57-51 in the consolation game of the BB&T Tipoff Classic hosted Shenandoah in men's basketball action on Saturday.

Wesley Brooks (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) scored nine of his team-best 12 points in the decisive second half to lead the Green Terror (1-1), who trailed 45-42 with 5:54 to play. Brooks was named to the all-tournament team for his play.

Keith Corbett led the Monarchs (0-2) with 14 points while Bryan Hockaday had 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Corbett hit two free throws to give his team a three-point edge with 5:54 to ply before Cameron Royster (Derwood, Md./Magruder) responded with a layup before hitting a free throw to tie the game at 45-all with 4:29 showing.

Two Nic Martin (Hagerstown, Md./St. Maria Goretti) free throws nearly a minute later gave McDaniel a 47-45 edge before Corbett drained a triple with 3:15 on the clock.

A Tim Stewart (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) layup with 2:53 showing put the Green Terror on top for good.

Brooks added a pair of free throws and Phillip Perry (Crownsville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) converted on the break to stretch the lead to five en route to the six-point win.

In a first half that featured six ties and two lead changes, McDaniel led by as many as seven on a Perry fast-break layup with 7:29 on the clock.

Two Corbett free throws gave Methodist a 24-22 edge with 47 ticks remaining but Martin responded with a layup to send the teams to locker room deadlocked.

Stewart added 11 points while Perry had 10.

McDaniel opens the Centennial Conference schedule at home against Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. Game time is 2 p.m.
