Cowles scores six in final minute

Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Christopher Cowles (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) scored all six of his points in the final 41 seconds to lead McDaniel to a 65-64 come-from-behind victory over Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action on Wednesday.

Louis Sarris-Grau (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) netted a game-high 23 points to lead the Green Terror (8-16, 5-12 CC), who snapped its five-game skid with the victory. Woody Butler (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown) added 12 points and a career high-tying three blocked shots.

Will Gates led three players in double figures for the Garnet (2-22, 2-15 CC) with 17 points while Michael Giannangeli added 13 points and Davis Ancona chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds.

Trailing by as many as seven on a Gates layup with 4:56 to play, Andrew Merlo (Rehoboth, Del./Cape Henlopen) responded with a 3-pointer to draw the hosts within 57-53.

Giannangeli stretched the lead back out to six before Sarris-Grau converted a three-point to slice the deficit in half with 2:56 remaining.

Giannangeli pushed the advantage back to 61-56 with 1:54 showing before Marcus Dyson (Scotch Plains, N.J./Union Catholic) converted the first of two free throws at the 1:13 mark.

With 40.3 seconds on the clock, Cowles hit a jumper, was fouled and connected on the ensuing free throws to make it a 61-60 game.

Dyson stole the ensuing inbounds pass and hit a pair of free throws with 36.5 seconds on the clock to tunr the one-point deficit into a one-point lead.

After Swarthmore missed both free throws at the other end, Tyler Smith (Fallston, Md./Fallston) corralled the rebound and Cowles hit on the second of two attempts to make it a two-point game with 25.0 seconds showing.

A deep 3-pointer from Gates gave the visitors a 63-62 lead with 12.7 seconds on the clock before Cowles brought the ball up and drove off a ball screen, drawing a foul with 6.2 ticks remaining.

He converted both attempts and the Garnet's game-winning 3-point attempt at the other end came up short.

Sarris-Grau and Rogalski exchanged baskets in the game's first minutes before layups from Sarris-Grau and Tyler Rudd (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) gave the Green Terror a 6-2 lead with 17:18 to play.

Two free throws from Sarris-Grau stretched the advantage to its largest at 18-12 nearly 10 minutes later.

Trailing 23-21, Jay Kober converted a three-point play for Swarthmore's first lead with 3:51 on the clock.

Rudd and Rogalski exchanged buckets before a Matt Sharma free throws gave the Garnet a 27-25 lead.

On the next McDaniel possession, Rudd aired out a pass to Butler, who threw it down for the game's third tie.

A Jordan Martinez layup and Rogalski 3-pointer gave the visitors a 32-27 lead before a Butler layup and two Rudd free throws closed the deficit to one at the break.

Sarris-Grau momentarily put the Green Terror back on top to start the second half but the Garnet reeled off 10 of the game's next 12 points to open up a 42-35 lead with 15:17 to play.

A Sarris-Grau layup and Rudd three-point play on the break trimmed the deficit to 44-43 with 13:03 to play – the first of three times McDaniel would draw within one over the next 3:09.

Rudd finished with nine points and six rebounds. Sarris-Grau and Dyson grabbed six boards each while Butler pulled down five.

McDaniel concludes the season at home against Gettysburg on Saturday. Game time is 3 p.m.
