Wingerd leads four in double figures

Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Trailing 70-69 with 5.4 seconds remaining in the first overtime, Emma Wingerd (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) sank two free throws and the defense held Franklin &Marshall without a shot attempt, giving McDaniel a 71-70 Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball victory on Saturday.

Wingerd's two free throws capped a 12-point, seven-rebound night individually and a 14-for-14 showing from the charity stripe for the Green Terror (3-3, 1-2 CC), who entered the game shooting just 54.0 percent from the line as a team. It was the first time in program history that the squad converted 10 or more free throws in a game without a miss.

Steph Perez (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) and Codi McMaster (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) matched Wingerd with 12 points each while Allie Eader (Ijamsville, Md./Linganore) added a season-best 11 points. Perez and Lauren Ballenger (Silver Spring, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) matched Wingerd for team-high honors with seven rebounds – a career-high total for both. Eader added a career high-tying eight assists.

Elizabeth Snyder paced the Diplomats (3-3, 1-3 CC) with 32 points. Alexa Barbush and Emma Lisle added double-doubles. Barbush tallied 17 points to go with 11 rebounds while Lisle recorded 13 points and 18 boards.

Trailing 60-52 on a Rachael Rybak (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) jumper with 3:28 to play in regulation, Franklin & Marshall tallied eight straight points to force overtime.

Two layups and a pair of free throws from Snyder closed the deficit to 60-34 with 1:34 to play before she found Kristina McCarthy for a layup in the final 45 seconds.

Snyder and Perez traded triples to open the extra session before a McCarthy jumper a Snyder 3-pointer opened up a 68-63 advantage – the Diplomats' largest of the game after not leading at all in regulation – with 3:33 showing.

McMaster hit two free throws to trim the deficit to three with 2:58 on the clock.

Snyder responded once again at the other end but Shelby Taylor (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) had the answer with a jumper of her own.

Perez canned a pair of free throws with 1:18 on the clock before Wingerd sealed the win.

After McCarthy tied the game for the third time in the opening 3:09, Rybak hit a jumper that put McDaniel in front with 16:01 on the clock – a lead that would last until the final minute of regulation.

After McMaster and Barbush traded baskets, Taylor hit a jumper that started a 6-0 burst over a 1-minute, 7-second span that opened up a 16-8 edge.

The first of Eader's career high-tying three 3-pointers stretched the lead to 10 for the first time at 21-11 with 11:19 to play in the opening half.

Back-to-back triples from Lindsey Nichols (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) and Brittney Davis (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) gave McDaniel its largest first-half lead at 30-17 with 3:56 showing en route to a 35-27 advantage at the break.

A Perez 3-pointer – her first points of the game – with 16:55 to play in the second half gave McDamiel its largest lead of the game, 42-28.

Perez added four steals and two assists. Eader, McMaster and Davis each nabbed three steals. McMaster was 6-for-6 from the stripe while Perez was 4-for-4.

The Green Terror returns to action at home against Johns Hopkins on Thursday. Game time is 7 p.m.
