Rudd records first double-double

Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Washington (Md.) put together a 17-5 run to overcome a nine-point deficit, taking its first lead of the game and held on to defeat McDaniel 65-62 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action on Saturday.

Tyler Rudd (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) led the Green Terror (7-12, 4-8 CC) with his first career double-double, recording a season-high 12 points to go with a career-best 12 rebounds. Louis Sarris-Grau (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) netted a game-high 19 points – 16 of which came in the first half.

Kevin Cunningham and Kevin Breslin paced the Shoremen (13-6, 9-3 CC) with 15 points each while Sal Schittino added 13, including a pair of key 3-pointers in the waning minutes.

Trailing 48-39 on a Phillip Perry (Crownsville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) fast-break layup, Breslin hit a pair of free throws with 14:10 on the clock to spark the game-changing run.

Max Finch added a layup with 12:04 to play before Sarris-Grau hit the first of two free throws to push the lead back to six with 11:20 remaining.

Three straight points from Cunningham closed the deficit to three before Evan Pupelis (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) went 3-for-4 from the line on one possession to stretch the advantage back to six with 8:31 on the clock.

Trailing 53-48, Cunningham converted a three-point play and Breslin hit a jumper to tie the game for the first time with 6:17 to play.

After a bevy of turnovers, Schittino canned a triple from the top of the key for Washington's first lead with 4:33 remaining.

Two Sarris-Grau free throws sliced the deficit to one but Olsen hit a layup to push the lead back to three.

Pupelis and Cunningham exchanged layups to keep it a three-point game with 2:34 on the clock before Schittino drained a trey in the right corner with 1:52 remaining, stretching the lead to 63-57.

Cullen Murray-Kemp (Trappe, Md./Easton) responded with a layup and Andrew Merlo (Rehoboth, Del./Cape Henlopen) used a few bounces off the rim before rattling home a second-chance 3-pointer to once again make it a one-point game with 42.0 seconds to play.

After the shot clock was reset on a jump ball with 7.6 seconds left after a desperation attempt from Breslin, Schittino was fouled and went to the line, sinking both attempts with 6.4 seconds showing.

A last-second attempt by the Green Terror through a double team fell short to give the Shoremen their first win in Westminster since 2005.

Keyed by four points from Sarris-Grau, McDaniel jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the game's first 2:13.

A Christopher Cowles (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) 3-pointer stretched the advantage to 13-6 with 14:23 remaining before five straight Washington points closed the deficit to two just 1:26 later.

A Sarris-Grau 3-pointer and Perry tip-in gave the Green Terror its only double-digit advantage of the game at 26-16 with 6:55 to play in the opening stanza.

A Breslin three-point play closed the margin to 28-24 with 4:34 to play but McDaniel scored four straight to push the lead back to eight en route to a 37-30 halfitme lead.

Finch closed the deficit to 43-39 with 15:11 remaining before Rudd canned a triple and Perry converted on the break for the nine-point advantage just 47 seconds later.

Murray-Kemp finished with nine points while Perry added eight points and five rebounds. Cowles contributed six assists.

McDaniel returns to action at home against Dickinson on Wednesday. Game time is 8 p.m.
