Perez tallies season-best 15

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Catholic opened the game on a 17-6 run en route to a 70-44 non-conference victory over McDaniel and the championship of the 2011 McDaniel Tipoff Tournament on Saturday.

Steph Perez (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) reached double figures for the third time in three games with the Green Terror (2-1), registering a season-best 15 points to earn a spot on the all-tournament team.

Katarina Owunna led the Cardinals (2-1) with a double-double, registering 12 points and 13 rebounds to nab a spot on the all-tournament team. Emily Grabiak was also named to the all-tournament team after a nine-point, five-rebound, five-assist, four-steal outing.

Holly Janicki staked Catholic to a 2-0 lead with a pair of free throws 56 seconds into the game before Grabiak doubled the advantage with a steal-and-layup.

Perez trimmed the deficit to 4-3 with the first of her three 3-pointers at the 17:14 mark.

Kelli Josephsen hit a layup with 15:46 to play to spark a 13-3 stretch that pushed the advantage to double digits with nearly four minutes later.

Rachael Rybak (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) trimmed the deficit to 25-18 with 4:20 on the first-half clock but the Cardinals tallied 10 of the half's final 13 points to take a 35-21 lead into the locker room.

Josephsen pushed the lead to 20 for the first time with a jumper with 18:13 to play, stretching the lead to 41-21.

Katherine Restrepo (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) made it a 51-34 game, hitting a jumper with 8:49 to play but Owunna countered with a second-chance layup to ignite another 13-3 burst. Morgan Huppenthal capped the stretch with a third-chance basket at the 3:08 mark.

Rybak and Restrepo each scored six points while Meg Biggart (Darien, Conn./Darien) contributed five assists.

The Green Terror returns to action in the Centennial Conference opener at home against Washington (Md.) on Tuesday. Game time is 6 p.m.
