Box Score Green Terror wins at Washington for first time since 1982
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Devon Lesniak
(Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) netted his sixth 20-point
performance of the season, tallying a game-high 25 points to key
McDaniel's 73-66 Centennial
Conference (CC) men's basketball victory at Washington (Md.) on
Saturday.
For the Green Terror (10-8, 7-4 CC), it marked the team's first
victory in Chestertown since an 84-80 overtime victory on Feb. 4,
1982 – a streak of 17 consecutive losses. McDaniel also
improved to 3-0 against the Shoremen (6-13, 5-7 CC) this season
– the first time the squad has accomplished that feat –
to remain alone in third place, one-half game behind
Gettysburg.
Kevin Breslin led four Washington players in double figures with
16 points.
Trailing by as many as 17 early in the second half, the Shoremen
put together a 22-6 run that turned a 56-42 deficit with 10:05 to
play into a 64-62 advantage 6 minutes, 50 seconds later.
After Sal Schittino hit a 3-pointer to give the hosts their
first lead since 5-4, Evan Pupelis
(Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) responded with a putback of his own
miss to knot the game with 2:52 showing.
Louis
Sarris-Grau (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) hit a layup
and Cullen
Murray-Kemp (Trappe, Md./Easton) converted two free throws
before Marcus
Dyson's (Scotch Plains, N.J./Union Catholic) steal-and-layup
capped an 8-0 burst that virtually sealed the victory for the Green
Terror with 1:45 on the clock.
Breslin trimmed the deficit to four with a pair of free throws
but Michael
Jarboe (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) canned a pair from the charity
stripe and Pupelis hit the second of two attempts in the final 15
seconds to set the final margin.
Knotted a 7-all with 15:59 remaining in the first half, the
Green Terror reeled off 10 straight points over the next 4:38.
Four straight Schittino points helped pull the Shoremen as close
as four with 5:29 showing but McDaniel tallied 16 of the half's
final 27 points to take a 36-25 lead into the break.
Lesniak capped an 11-5 burst out of the second-half gate to give
his team the largest lead of the contest at 47-30.
Murray-Kemp finished with 13 points and seven rebounds while
Jarboe tallied 10 on a 3-for-3 showing from the floor and 2-for-2
effort from the line. Pupelis added nine points and nine rebounds.
Lesniak chipped in six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Swarthmore on Monday.
