Green Terror notches 1-2 day in home conference quad
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Tom Goretsas
(Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) went 3-0 to lead McDaniel to a 1-2
day at a home Centennial
Conference (CC) quad wrestling action on Saturday.
The Green Terror (4-8, 2-3 CC) opened the day falling to
14th-ranked Merchant Marine Academy 35-12 and Stevens 37-9 before
taking down Washington and Lee, 39-9.
In the opening match against the Mariners (8-2, 2-0 CC),
Merchant Marine won six straight bouts to turn a 6-3 deficit into a
32-6 advantage.
After Jordan Alfaro recorded a 2-0 victory at 125, Goretsas
earned his first of two forfeits to give the Green Terror a
short-lived 6-3 advantage.
James Beshada used an 8-3 win to knot the match and Martin Bell
recorded a 45-second fall at 149 for a 12-6 match lead.
Dan Twito added a major decision 10-1 before Vincent Renaut and
Erik Schott bookended a Justin Diesel second-period pin with
technical falls.
Will Yeo
(Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills) notched a 6-minute, 22-second
fall to give the Green Terror its only other victory of the
match.
In the highlight battle of the day, Judd Connell, who was ranked
fourth in the latest Brute-adidas/NWCA individual rankings, snapped
third-ranked Brock
Glotfelty's (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) 20-match
conference winning streak with a 6-5 decision, staving off a
furious Glotfelty third-period rally after notching a pair of
first-period takedowns.
The last time Glotfelty lost during the conference dual season
was to Connell on Jan. 19, 2008.
Against the Ducks (9-7-1, 2-0 CC), Brandon Ling opened with an
8-5 victory before Goretsas knotted the match at 3-all with a 9-2
win. The junior was set up for a major decision but Andrew Boehm
escaped in the final seconds of the bout to return the margin to
seven.
Ryan Bridge opened a seven-match winning streak for Stevens that
included four pins.
CJ Casserta (149) and Leo Dormann (157) both recorded falls in
the first minute of their bouts while Jason Nowakoski (184)
recorded his pin with three seconds remaining in the first period.
William Sharkey (165) added a pin in 2:03.
Vincent Termini narrowly edged Yeo, avoiding a takedown in the
waning seconds to win, 4-3.
Glotfetly rounded out the match with a forfeit.
Against the Generals (1-6, 0-4 CC), PJ Farinella
(Livingston, N.J./Livingston) and Goretsas took forfeits for a 12-0
lead before Mike Tancredi
(Wall, N.J./Wall Twp.) notched a 4-3 victory to secure the victory
for McDaniel.
H.T. Kotchinian broke up the shutout with a 14-8 win at 149
before Keith Jaworski (157) and Daniel Igel (165) added victories
by margins of 6-3 and 11-5, respectively.
Chris Urps
(Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake), Scott Forrester
(Manchester, N.J./Manchester Twp.), Yeo and Glotfelty added forfeit
victories.
McDaniel returns to action at Delaware Valley on Thursday. Match
