Haverford clamps down on McDaniel

Box Score

Fords hold Green Terror to seven first-half points for first win in series since 1996

HAVERFORD, Md. – Victoria Sobocinski netted 14 points to lead Haverford to a 55-26 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Thursday.

Dominique Meeks and Nina Voith added nine points apiece for the Fords (6-7, 4-5 CC), who held the Green Terror (2-11, 2-8 CC) to just seven first-half points en route to just their second victory in the 23-game all-time series. Voith added a game-high nine rebounds as a part of a 53-44 advantage on the glass.

Rachael Rybak (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) and Cara Thompson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) netted five points apiece while Katherine Restrepo (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) and Stephanie Fish (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) each tallied four for McDaniel.

The Green Terror converted just three of its 32 first-half attempts from the floor and finished 8-for-65 for abysmal 12.3 percent shooting. It was the fewest points in a game for the team since a 73-23 loss at Bridgewater on Jan. 29, 1972.

Haverford jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the game's first 5:21 and held McDaniel to just one field goal in its first 16 attempts, building a 17-2 advantage over the game's initial 11:03.

A Rybak 3-pointer with 8:29 on the clock snapped a 5-minute, 5-second drought but the Fords notched 14 of the final 16 points to take a 31-7 lead into the break.

Haverford stretched the lead to as many as 37 when Alejandra Alvarez put the hosts on top 48-11 with 8:24 showing but Thompson responded with the second of three Green Terror triples.

After not shooting a free throw for the game's first 23:16, Fish hit the front end of two attempts as part of a 7-for-11 showing from the stripe over the final 6:44, helping McDaniel score 15 of the game's final 22 points.

Morgan Koopman (Finksburg, Md./McDonogh) netted her first three collegiate points while Emma Adams (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) chipped in a 3-pointer and Meredith Larsen (Phoenix, Md./Bryn Mawr) added two points to round out the scoring.

The Green Terror returns to action at home against Washington (Md.) on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
