Box Score Rutherford converts PK for difference in 2-1 win over
Elizabethtown
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Max Rutherford (Potomac, Md./Winston
Churchill) converted a penalty kick in the 78th minute to provide
the difference in McDaniel's 2-1 non-conference men's
soccer victory over Elizabethtown on Wednesday.
Trailing 1-0, the Green Terror (3-3) scored two goals 1 minute,
43 seconds apart to turn the one-goal deficit into a one-goal
advantage and the defense held strong in the final 12:01 for the
victory.
Erik Weber tallied for the Blue Jays (2-1-2), who finished with
a 15-8 advantage in shots that included a 3-1 edge after McDaniel
took the lead.
With an Elizabethtown defender on his back in the box, the Green
Terror played the ball back in and the defender reached out and was
called for the handball.
Rutherford stepped to the spot and slid the ball into the
lower-right corner past a diving keeper to break the 1-all
deadlock.
Taylor Helsel played a ball over the top in the game's
21st minute that Weber collected in the left side of the box and
flipped into the backside of the goal for a 1-0 lead.
In the 77th minute, Luis Calderon (Silver Spring, Md./Bullis)
played a ball over the defense. With the keeper out, Eddy Lingue
(Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) chipped the ball high over his head and
into the goal to even the score.
Zach Nibbelink (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) made five saves
for McDaniel while Eric Carr made one stop at the other end.
The Green Terror returns to action at home against Haverford on
Saturday. Game time is 3 p.m.
