Kovalcheck earns medalist honors in playoff
ELVERSON, Pa. – Paul Kovalcheck (Fairless Hills,
Pa./Truman) fired a final-round 71 to finish with 224 and
force a playoff, leading McDaniel to a second-place finish at the
2010 Centennial Conference (CC) men's golf championship on
Saturday and Sunday at Stonewall.
Kovalcheck and Franklin & Marshall's Cameron
Warner both fired tournament-low scores of 224 over the
two-day, 54-hole championship to force the third playoff for
medalist and Player of the Year honors.
The pair shot par and bogey on the first and second playoff
holes before Kovalcheck shot a par-5 on the 18th hole – the
third playoff hole – to capture the individual title.
Kovalcheck became the Green Terror's 20th All-CC selection
and eighth individual champion.
As a team, the Green Terror fired a 921 over the three rounds to
finish 11 strokes behind Franklin & Marshall, which captured
its second straight crown and automatic bid to the NCAA Division
III championship at Hershey Country Club on May 11-14 with a
tournament-record 910. McDaniel will now wait until May 3 to hear
if the team earned one of three at-large bids or any player was
selected as one of the five individuals.
McDaniel shot a 312 in the first round, trailing the Diplomats
by seven strokes. The deficit grew to 15 shots after 36 holes when
Franklin & Marshall fired a 301 and the Green Terror shot a
309. McDaniel made up four strokes over the final 18 holes,
shooting a 300 to the Diplomats' 304 but notched its seventh
second-place finish to go with five titles in the 17 years of the
tournament.
Greg Bowman (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) and
KJ Mazurek (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven)
finished tied for seventh place overall with a three-day score of
230.
Bowman capped his weekend with a 73 in the final round after a
77 in round one and an 80 in the split second-round.
Mazurek fired his low round in the second round, which was split
over the two days with the front nine being played on Saturday and
the back nine on Sunday, with a 73. He carded a 78 in round one and
a 79 in round three.
Bryan Johnson (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll)
was 20th overall with a 243 (81-79-83) while Alex Campbell
(Howell, N.J./Wall) was tied for 22nd with a 245
(87-81-77).
