Box Score Blue Jays put together 13-5 run to down McDaniel
WESTMINSTER, Md. - Andrew Farber-Miller
recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to help
Johns Hopkins to a 65-56 victory over McDaniel in Centennial
Conference (CC) men's basketball action on Friday.
Pat O'Connell added 20 points for the Blue Jays
(10-11, 6-8 CC), who used a 13-5 run in the second half to turn a
two-point advantage into a double-digit lead with 3:02 to play.
Woody Butler (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown)
netted a game- and career-high 23 points to pace the Green Terror
(8-14, 4-11 CC), who dropped its sixth straight game and were
officially eliminated from the conference playoff race a season
after appearing the semifinals. The six-game skid is the longest
for the team since dropping seven straight in Jan. 2005.
Freshman Tyler Rudd (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen
Burnie), who entered the game with five points this
season, hit a jumper with 9:36 to play as part of his eight-point
effort to closed the McDaniel deficit to 45-43.
O'Connell responded with a second-chance layup off his own miss
to spark the game-clinching run. The senior notched five points
during the stretch.
Four straight points from Butler and a pair of Rudd free throws
closed the deficit to 58-54 but O'Conner hit a pair of free throws
with 48.2 seconds on the clock and the Blue Jays converted 7 of 8
from the line down the stretch the seal the win.
Johns Hopkins built a 13-4 lead 3:41 into the game before four
points from Marcus Dyson (Scotch Plains, N.J./Union
Catholic), four from Butler and a Rudd jumper accounted
for a 10-0 burst that gave the Green Terror its first lead of the
game at the 11:39 mark.
An O'Connell jumper and Tim McCarty layup gave
the visitors a two-point advantage before the first of two Butler
dunks evened the game at 16-all.
The Blue Jays responded with eight straight points to take a
24-16 lead with 7:42 to play.
Trailing 29-23, Butler slammed home his second dunk of the night
with 3:04 to play to ignite a 9-3 burst to the locker room that
evened the game at intermission.
Karl Nelson (Owings Mills, Md./Park School of
Baltimore) hit a jumper to open the second half for two of
his 10 points.
After two ties and seven lead changes over the next nine
minutes, Mike Henrici, who finished with 13
points, hit a pair of bucket that included a three-point play to
give the visitors a four-point lead.
The Green Terror returns to action at Ursinus on Saturday. Game
time is 3 p.m.
