Box Score Green Terror comes from behind to down Swarthmore, 71-66
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Katelyn Fischer (Reisterstown,
Md./Seton Keough) finished with 18 points, including
hitting three free throws in the final minute, to lead McDaniel to
a 71-66 win at Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) women's
basketball action on Monday.
Ali Moreland (Davidsonville, Md./South River)
added 15 points for the Green Terror (15-4, 13-2 CC), who finished
with 20 offensive rebounds and clinched a berth in the CC
tournament for the ninth consecutive season.
Kathryn Stockbower led the Garnet (9-11, 6-9
CC) with 19 points and nine rebounds, failing to record a
double-double for the first time in 12 games.
After a single Ross free throw with 2:31 on the clock evened the
game, Moreland sank a trey from the top of the arc with 1:54 on the
clock for a 67-64 lead.
The Garnet missed the front end of a 1-and-1 opportunity with
43.0 to play before Fischer went to line and sank the second of two
attempts with 32.1 seconds on the clock to stretch the lead to
four.
Inbounding with 15.8 seconds, Bodur put back her own miss with
7.3 seconds showing to slice the deficit in half.
With 6.6 seconds, Fischer hit both of her attempts from the line
to make it a two-possession game once again.
After a turnover at midcourt with 3.4 seconds showing, Moreland
was fouled with 0.6 seconds and hit one to finish the night three
points shy of 1,000 for her career.
A Cara Thompson (Hagerstown, Md./North
Hagerstown) gave McDaniel an 11-6 lead with 15:15 to play
in the first half before Madeline Ross
basket-and-foul play at the 11:23 mark keyed a 10-0 burst that gave
the hosts a 16-11 lead with 10:35 showing.
A Thompson layup snapped a 6-minute, 7-second drought and
momentarily halted the Garnet run but for straight points stretched
the lead to seven for the first time.
A Ceylan Bodur 3-pointer pushed the lead to as
many as eight with 2:32 showing before the Green Terror reeled off
the eight of the half's final 10 points to pull with 34-32 at the
break.
Four straight points from Bodur out of the second-half gate
stretched the lead to 38-32 before back-to-back fast-break buckets
from Fischer and two Whitney Snoops (Millersville,
Md./Archbishop Spalding) evened the game with 17:26
showing.
An Eliza Polli jumper with a foot on the line
halted the 10-0 McDaniel run with 15:33 on the clock before
Catherine Mills (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) countered
with a 15-foot baseline jumper.
Two Stockbower free throws with 14:12 to play evened the game at
44-all.
After two Thompson free throws and a Moreland layup gave the
Green Terror a 56-52 lead, Genny Pezzola converted
a four-point play with 7:30 on the clock to tie the game once
again.
Trailing 61-59 on a Stockbower third-chance layup, Sally
Grace (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) canned a
triple from the right corner to give the visitors a one-point
advantage with 4:33 on the clock.
After Mills forced a jump ball on the ensuing Garnet possession,
Thompson hit a layup to give the Green Terror a three-point lead.
A Stockbower jumper in the lane cut the lead to 64-63 with 3:51
on the clock.
The Green Terror returns to action at home against Dickinson on
Wednesday. Game time is 6 p.m.
