Johns Hopkins shoots way to win

Box Score

Blue Jays shoot 56 percent in 67-47 victory over McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Lyndsay Burton scored a game-high 17 points to lead Johns Hopkins to a 67-47 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Tuesday.

Alex Vassila added 12 points while Siobhan Callanan chipped in 11 for the Blue Jays (8-1, 5-0 CC), who own their eighth straight game.

Kim Acton (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) led the Green Terror (0-7, 0-5 CC) with 14 points while Cara Thompson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) added 10.

A Rachael Rybak (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) 3-pointer – McDaniel's first in three games – and an Acton layup staked the hosts to a 5-0 lead through the game's first 2:15.

Two Chantel Mattiola free throws 42 seconds later got Johns Hopkins on the board.

Trailing 9-4 on an Emma Adams (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) jumper at the 13:45 mark, Burton hit a jumper on the Blue Jays' next possession to spark a 6-0 burst that gave the visitors their first lead with 11:53 to play in the first half.

Katherine Restrepo (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) momentarily put the Green Terror back in front on the team's next possession but Burton hit a short jumper with 10:15 showing to spark an 8-2 burst. Mattiola capped the stretch with one of her three 3-pointers 1 minute, 49 seconds later.

A Rybak jumper with 4:55 to play made it a 22-19 game but Johns Hopkins reeled off the game's next 12 points to take a 15-point advantage in the final minute of the first stanza before an Acton layup made it a 34-21 game at the intermission.

Seven points from Callanan in the first 3:20 of the second half helped the Blue Jays stretch the lead to 46-27.

A Meredith Larsen (Phoenix, Md./Bryn Mawr) 3-pointer in the right corner capped a 7-0 spurt that closed the deficit to 12 with 13:54 to play but the hosts could get no closer.

A Vassila basket-and-free throw swelled the lead to as many as 24 with 2:32 to play but an Acton jumper and two Kelsey Franklin (Woodbine, Md./South Carroll) free throws rounded out the scoring.

Johns Hopkins, which entered the game leading the CC in field-goal percentage, shot 56.3 percent for the game, including a blistering 60.9 percent in the first half, while the league's top-ranked field-goal percentage defense held McDaniel to 37.8 percent from the floor.

The Green Terror returns to action at Bryn Mawr on Saturday. Game time is 2 p.m.
