Garnet use late run to seal conference win over McDaniel

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Ceylan Bodur recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead Swarthmore to a 75-66 win over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Tuesday.

Kathryn Stockbower added a double-double of her own for the Garnet (4-1, 2-0 CC) with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Meredith Larsen (Phoenix, Md./Bryn Mawr) led the Green Terror (0-4, 0-2 CC), matching her career high with 13 points. Kim Acton (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) added 11 points while and Rachael Rybak (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) netted a career-best 13 points.

After a back-and-forth first five minutes of the half, Acton drained a 3-pointer in the corner directly off an inbounds pass to give McDaniel its first lead since 2-0.

Madeline Ross countered with a quick layup at the other end for a 44-43 edge with 14:10 to play.

Kayla Moritzky added a 3-pointer in the near corner to push the lead back to four 32 seconds later.

A Cara Thompson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) steal-and-floater in the lane capped a 5-0 spurt that once again gave the Green Terror a one-point advantage at the 12:02 mark.

Rybak stretched the lead to three with an 18-footer near the end of the shot clock before a Stockbower three-point play and Bodur trey put Swarthmore back on top by three and forced a McDaniel timeout with 9:53 showing.

Genny Pezzola and Larsen exchanged triples before Bodur converted a layup and free throw coupled with Katie Lytle's steal-and-layup pushed the lead to 61-53 with 8:40 to play.

Two Stockbower free throws extended the lead to as many as 11 with 4:04 to play before an Emma Adams (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) 3-pointer and Rybak jumper clocked the deficit to 70-64 with 1:49 on the clock.

A Stockbower putback coupled with a 3-for-4 showing from the line in the final minute sealed the nine-point win.

Tied at 6-all on a Whitney Snoops (Millersville, Md./Archbishop Spaulding) layup at the 15:41 mark, the Garnet converted four straight free throws to open up a 10-6 advantage just 1:33 later.

After a Sarah Brajtbord jumper extended the advantage to 16-10, Kelsey Franklin (Woodbine, Md./South Carroll) snapped a 4-minute, 47-second drought from the floor to spark an 8-2 burst that drew the Green Terror even with 7:36 on the clock.

An Allie Eader (Frederick, Md./Linganore) 3-pointer and Thompson basket-and-foul accounted for the other six McDaniel points in the stretch.

A Bodur layup and Moritzky 3-pointer from the top of the key on back-to-back Swarthmore possessions quickly stretched the lead back to five just 1:03 later.

Acton momentarily drew the visitors back within three but an 8-2 stretch gave the hosts their largest advantage of the half with 3:20 showing en route to a 34-30 halftime edge.

Thompson added seven points and matched her career high with six assists.

The Green Terror returns to action at home against Dickinson on Thursday. Game time is 7 p.m.
