Box Score Shoremen down McDaniel 65-64 in final minute
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Chris Olsen, who finished
with just four points for Washington (Md.), converted a pair of
free throws with 11 seconds to play and send his team to a 65-64
victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) men's
basketball action on Wednesday.
Andrew Chambers led the way with 22 points
while Kevin Breslin added 18 for Shoremen (4-4,
2-2 CC), who defeated the Green Terror (6-4, 2-1 CC) for the 17th
consecutive season in Chestertown.
Michael Jarboe (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) matched
his career high with 18 points for McDaniel while Louis
Sarris-Grau (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) added
12.
Trailing 63-60 after two Alan Kines free throws
with 1:49 to play, Jarboe hit a pair of free throws and
Michael McClain (Takoma Park, Md./Montgomery
Blair) converted a layup on the break with 36 seconds to
play to give the Green Terror a one-point lead.
With 11 seconds to play, Olsen went to the line and hit both
free throws around a McDaniel timeout to secure the victory.
Trailing 14-13 with 13:41 to play in the opening half after a
back-and-forth open to the game, Sarris-Grau hit a layup to spark
an 11-1 run that gave McDaniel a nine-point advantage with 6:29
showing.
Still trailing 29-21 lead with 3:04 play, the Shoremen tallied
10 of the final 14 points to close the deficit to 33-31 at
intermission.
A Karl Nelson (Owings Mills, Md./Park School of
Baltimore) jumper with 17:09 to play in the second half
stretched the Green Terror lead to 36-31.
Trailing 38-35 nearly two minutes, Washington tallied the next
five points to take a two-point advantage.
Knotted at 40-all, a Chambers layup capped a 12-2 burst that
gave the hosts a 52-42 lead with 9:26 on the clock.
Keyed by one of Jarboe's four 3-pointers, McDaniel tallied 12
straight points to take a 54-52 lead with 5:38 to play.
The Green Terror returns to action at Muhlenberg on Saturday.
Game time is 2 p.m.
