Box Score Green Terror works overtime for 76-74 win over Washington
WESTMINSTER, Md. - Three free throws in the final 18.4 seconds
of overtime, including two from Ali Moreland
(Davidsonville, Md./South River) and one from
Ashley Lyles (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti),
gave McDaniel a 76-74 victory over Washington (Md.) in Centennial
Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Saturday.
Moreland finished with 19 points while Lyles recorded her first
double-double of the season with 17 points and a career-high 17
rebounds to help the Green Terror (12-4, 11-2 CC) to its 12th
consecutive victory. Katelyn Fischer (Reisterstown,
Md./Seton Keough) led the way with a game- and career-high
22 points to go with five assists.
Sally O'Donnell led the Shorewomen (6-11, 4-8
CC) with 19 points while Jane O'Donnell added 17,
including hitting five 3-pointers, and Meghan Tait
chipped in 15.
For the third time in the last six games, McDaniel found itself
in a double-digit second-half deficit, trailing 55-41 with 13:03 to
play in regulation on a Sally O'Donnell triple - one of 10 hit by
the visitors in the contest.
A Moreland jumper in the lane 22 seconds later sparked a 24-7
run that gave the Green Terror its first lead of the game with 1:04
to play.
Fischer contributed 12 of her points during the rally, including
eight straight McDaniel points after the Moreland jumper.
Sally Grace (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales
Academy) added five of her eight points during the stretch
that included converting a Fischer rebound and long outlet pass
with 6:15 showing that closed the deficit to 57-55.
Three Erin Kile free throws helped stretch the
lead back out to five before Grace connected on a 3-pointer and
Fischer hit both a jumper with her foot on the 3-point line and
driving layup for the lead.
With 23.8 seconds left, Julie Sherwood hit a
floating layup and converted the ensuing free throw for a one-point
Shorewoman lead.
With 6.2 seconds on the clock, Lyles was fouled and hit the
front end of the two-shot foul to force overtime.
Fischer converted on the break to open overtime before
Meghan Tait tied the game for the fifth time with
3:43 to play.
A Maggie King triple gave the visitors a
three-point advantage nearly a minute later.
Two Moreland jumpers sandwiched around a Tait basket pulled the
hosts back within one with 1:20 showing.
Another Moreland layup gave McDaniel the lead with 41.4 seconds
on the clock.
O'Donnell hit in the lane with 30.3 seconds showing to give
Washington its final lead, 74-73.
Two Moreland free throws with 18.4 seconds, a blocked shot on
the defensive end and single Lyles free throw with 4.6 seconds on
the clock finished the contest.
Knotted at 2-all with 16:46 remaining in the opening half, Kile
hit a layup to spark an 8-2 burst that gave the Shorewomen a 10-4
lead just 1:55 later.
A Moreland foul-line jumper and Grace 3-pointr sliced the
deficit to one but another 8-0 run stretched the lead to nine with
12:19 showing.
Two Fischer free throws narrowed the margin to 31-29 with 4:22
to play but Washington put together a 17-4 run that spanned both
halves to take its first 14-point lead that included holding a
41-31 advantage at halftime.
Cara Thompson (Hagerstown, Md./North
Hagerstown) added nine rebounds and four steals for
McDaniel.
The Green Terror returns to action at York (Pa.) on Tuesday.
