overtime win over Washington
WESTMINSTER, Md. - Miguel Jones (Baltimore, Md./North
County) netted 18 points to lead five McDaniel players in
double figures in a 73-70 overtime victory against Washington (Md.)
in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action on Saturday.
Marcus Dyson (Scotch Plains, N.J./Union
Catholic) added his second double-double of the season
with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Green Terror (8-8, 4-5 CC),
who got 12 points each from Woody Butler (Smithsburg,
Md./Middletown), Michael Jarboe (Monrovia,
Md./Urbana) and Michael McClain (Takoma Park,
Md./Montgomery Blair).
Andrew Chambers led the Shoremen (8-6, 6-4 CC)
with 22 points while Kevin Breslin and
Alan Kines chipped in 17 and 15, respectively.
In a game that featured 14 ties and 11 lead changes, McDaniel
built a lead as large as 10 with 16:39 remaining in the second half
but watched that lead evaporate over the next seven minutes.
Washington never opened up an advantage of more than three
points - coming on a Breslin fastbreak layup with 6:41 to play in
regulation - before a McClain basket-and-foul play 28 seconds later
evened the game for the ninth time.
McDaniel never trailed after that but the Shoremen did force
five more ties - the final coming on two Breslin free throws with
6.4 seconds on the clock.
Jones converted an old fashioned three-point play on the Green
Terror's first possession of overtime and the squad held the lead
the rest of the way.
A Dyson jumper stretched the lead to as many as five with 3:34
to play.
After Dyson made it a 69-65 game with 1:36 to play, Sal
Schittino sliced the deficit to one with a 3-pointer 26
seconds later before four Jones free throws in the final minute
preserved the victory.
Knotted at 4-all, Jarboe canned a 3-pointer with 14:52 on the
first-half clock and added a fastbreak layup to give the hosts a
five-point advantage.
Stil trailing by five on a Butler dunk at the 7:18 mark, Kines
and Mark DeBoy each hit treys to help the Shoremen
take a 20-19 lead with 5:33 showing.
The teams exchanged the lead five times over the next three
minutes before a Jones 3-pointer and McClain layup helped the Green
Terror take a 29-26 lead into the locker room.
A 13-6 run over the first 3:21 of the second half allowed
McDaniel to open up the only double-digit advantage of the contest.
Butler finished a rebound shy of a double-double while Jarboe
handed out eight assists and grabbed seven boards.
The Green Terror returns to action at Swarthmore on Wednesday.
