CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Brock Glotfelty (Grantsville,
Md./Northern Garrett) lost his first match of the weekend
but wrestled his way back to finish eighth at heavyweight at the
2009 NCAA Division III wrestling championships on Friday and
Saturday, becoming McDaniel's eighth wrestling
All-American.
The sophomore finished his season with an overall record of 37-4
– the most wins by a Green Terror wrestler since Chris
McNally won 37 times in 2000-1. Steve Smiddy has the program record
with 41 victories in 1996-97. Glotfelty's .902 winning
percentage was the best all-time by a wrestler with more than 20
decisions.
Glotfelty, the sixth seed, lost his ability for a national
championship in his first appearance at the national championship,
falling 6-5 to Elizabethtown's Deron Sharp
in the opening round.
In Friday's night session, Glotfelty recorded his program
record-tying 22nd pin of the year 1 minute, 54 seconds
into the match against Joe Murphy (SUNY
Cortland).
Glotfelty added a 6-2 win over No. 4-seed Glenn
Geesman (MIT) to guarantee himself a top-eight finish and
All-America honors.
In his opening match on Saturday, Augsburg's Andrew
Witzel notched a 3-1 victory to relegate Glotfelty to the
seventh-place match, where he dropped a 4-3 decision to
Mitch Sanders (Coe) – the seventh
seed.
Glotfelty joined fellow Centennial Conference wrestler Rob Kein
(Muhlenberg) as the only two conference wrestlers to come home in
the top eight. Kein finished eighth at 149.
