WESTMINSTER, Md. – Brock Glotfelty (Grantsville,
Md./Northern Garrett) finished first at heavyweight to
lead McDaniel to a third-place finish at the 2009 Centennial
Conference (CC) wrestling championships at home on Saturday.
Glotfelty improved to 35-1 on the season, going 3-0 on the day to
earn the championship and berth to the 2009 NCAA Division III
Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Mar. 6-7.
As a team, the Green Terror finished third with 54 points behind
Merchant Marine, which successfully defended its title with 116
points, and Ursinus (66 points). The Mariners grabbed six of the 10
individual championships to win their second consecutive conference
title.
Muhlenberg finished fourth, one-half point behind
McDaniel.
Glotfelty opened his day with a 2-minute, 29-second fall of
Ursinus' Fernando Jones before notching his
21st pin of the season, downing John
Christopher (Washington and Lee) in 1:35 to advance to the
championship bout for the second straight year.
In the championship bout, Jud Connell (Merchant
Marine) notched a takedown in the waning seconds of the third
period to knot the match at 4-all but Glotfelty had more than one
minute of advantage time to take the title, 5-4.
Four other Green Terror wrestlers finished in the top four of their
respective weight class.
Brent Lowe (Dumfries, Va./Forest Park) started the
parade of McDaniel competitors in the consolation finals, winning
10-0 to place third. Lowe added a 15-0 technical fall one minute
into his 149-pound opening-round bout. He added a 1-minute,
4-second pin for a 3-1 day.
Zach Hetrick (Hanover, Pa./South Western) also
finished third, taking the consolation final match of the 165-pound
bracket by an 8-2 margin. Hetrick also finished 3-1, adding a 14-4
win and a second-period technical fall, 16-0.
Ryan Deiter (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) recorded
an authorative pin of Johns Hopkins' Hector
Cintron, who he lost to in the opening round, in 1 minute,
8 seconds into the 184-pound third-place match to finish the day
3-1 in third place. After dropping his opening match, Deiter
recorded a pin in 2:16 and 11-2 victory to advanc
e to the consolation final.
Will Yeo (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills)
finished fourth at 197, going 2-2. He dropped a 4-3
decision in the first tie-breaker period before added a
second-period fall and 1-0 win to advance to the consolation
final.
