TOWSON, Md. – Ali Moreland (Davidsonville,
Md./South River) and Kim Staub (Hanover,
Pa./Delone Catholic) each tallied 18 points to lead
McDaniel to an 81-66 victory over Goucher in non-conference action
on Thursday.
The Green Terror (14-10), who tallied a season-high 81 points in
the victory, reached the 70-point mark for the fourth time in the
last five games after only reaching 70 three times over the first
19 contests of the season.
Elizabeth von Ende paced the Gophers (5-18) with
17 points while Kelsey Myette and Amber
Smith tallied 13 and 11, respectively.
Trailing 14-11 with 12:10 remaining in the first half on a single
von Ende free throw, Moreland hit back-to-back 15-foot jumpers from
the left wing to spark a 12-0 run that gave McDaniel a 23-14 lead
with 7:37 to play.
Goucher tallied the next six points to close within 23-20,
including layups off consecutive Green Terror
turnovers.
A Moreland layup on the break and three free throws stretched the
lead back to eight with 4:16 remaining in the stanza.
Five free throws and a slashing Smith layup trimmed the deficit to
28-27 but McDaniel netted 10 of the game's next 13 points to
push the lead back to eight before a Smith driving layup in the
final three seconds made it a 38-32 game at the
intermission.
A von Ends 3-pointer out 24 seconds out of the break closed the
deficit to three but the Green Terror put together a 13-4 stretch
over the next nearly seven minutes to stretch the lead to
51-39.
An Ashley Lyles (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti)
layup with 11:21 to play stretched the lead to as many as 15 at
56-41 before a Kiara Doughty layup and Myette
triple pulled the Gophers within 10.
Two Lauren Wyble (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park)
free throws pushed the lead back to 12 but von Ende responded with
a 3-pointer to close Goucher within single digits but Staub hit a
trey in the left corner to open a 61-49 advantage with 9:14 to play
and starting a 13-3 run over the next 3 minutes, 19
seconds.
Five points from Moreland and three from Emma Adams
(Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) keyed the burst that swelled the
lead to its largest of the game, 71-52.
Behind four points from Staub, McDaniel opened the game with six of
the first eight points.
Trailing 8-5, the Gophers tallied nine of the next 12 to take its
14-11 lead.
Snoops added 10 points and nine rebounds while Lyles had 11 points.
Moreland added three assists and four steals.
The Green Terror, who has clinched a berth in next week's CC
tournament, concludes the regular season at Gettysburg on Saturday.
A McDaniel victory will ensure the Green Terror a first-round bye
while a loss will mean the squad has to play in the opening round
on Wednesday. Game time on Saturday is 4 p.m.
