Glotfelty takes heavyweight title
GRANTHAM, Pa. -Brock Glotfelty (Grantsville,
Md./Northern Garrett) improved to 18-0, going 4-0 with a
pin and three major decisions to win the heavyweight title and lead
McDaniel to an eighth-place finish at the Petrofes Invitational
hosted by Messiah in wrestling action on Friday and Saturday.
The Green Terror finished with 66 points in the 13-team field.
Wilkes won the tournament with 146 points. Springfield finished
second with 144.5 points while Messiah (125), Mount Union (115.5)
and Ursinus (108) rounded out the top five.
Glotfelty opened his day with his team-leading 10th pin of the
season, falling Dan Atkinson (Springfield) in just
1:17. He then tripled his major-decision victories to date with
three more wins to take his fourth tournament title in as many
attempts this season. He won the championship bout 9-1 over the
third-seed Derick Hesson of Mount Union.
Tommy Goretsas (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll)
added a fourth-place showing at 133. The rookie notched a pair of
decisions before pinning Wilkes' Andrew Fisher in
1:40 to advance to the semifinals, where he fell to the second-seed
Eddie Giron (Springfield), 9-4.
Goretsas notched an 8-5 win to advance to the third-place bout
but fell to the top seed, Ryan Wilson (Wilkes) by
a 6-2 margin.
Earl Eppard (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) finished
seventh at 125. After falling by first-period pin in his opening
bout on Friday, the freshman wrestled back with three victories in
the consolation bracket to ensure he would place. He fell to the
second-seed Scott Mantua (Wilkes) 4-1 to drop to
the seventh-place bout, where he notched a 7-0 win over Messiah's
Andrew Clark.
Brent Lowe (Dumfries, Va./Forest Park) added
three victories at 149, including his ninth and 10th technical
falls of the season.
Matt Peters (Annadale, Va./W.T. Woodson) went
3-2 at 157 with a major decision and first-period pin.
McDaniel returns to action at the North/South Duals hosted by
Ursinus on Jan. 9. Action begins at 10 a.m.
