Box Score Garnet tallies game-winner with 3.4 seconds left for 51-49 win
at McDaniel
WESTMINSTER, Md. - Kathryn Stockbower netted 30
points, including the game-winning layup with 3.4 seconds on the
clock, to lead Swarthmore to a 51-49 victory at McDaniel in
Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Tuesday.
After a missed jumper by the Green Terror (0-4, 0-2 CC) in the
waning seconds, Pamela Costello corralled a loose
ball and the Garnet (2-2, 1-1 CC) pushed the ball up the floor with
the game tied. With the ball at the foul line, Ceylan
Bodur found a wide-open Stockbower under the basket for
the go-ahead bucket.
Ali Moreland (Davidsonville, Md./South River),
who finished with 17 points, received the ensuing inbounds pass and
dribbled up the floor but her floater from the eight feet out on
the right side rimmed out as the final horn sounded.
In a game filled with 55 combined turnovers, neither team could
find a rhythm in the first half.
After two Stockbower free throws staked the visitors to a 2-0
lead in the first minute, Catherine Mills (Ijamsville,
Md./Urbana) hit a layup to knot the game at the 18:28
mark.
Stockbower put Swarthmore back in front by two before a
Katelyn Fischer (Reisterstown, Md./Seton Keough)
3-pointer gave McDaniel its first lead at 5-4. Mills stretched the
lead to 7-4 before the Garnet converted the game's next six points
to take a 10-7 lead with 14:11 on the first-half clock.
Moreland snapped a nearly four-minute scoring drought with a
fast-break layup off a Mills steal and Sally Grace
(Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) feed.
Four straight Stockbower points stretched the lead to 16-9 with
9:45 showing before Sam Witman (New Oxford, Pa./New
Oxford) converted her first collegiate bucket to snap
another 5-minute, 3-second scoring drought.
The Garnet stretched the lead to 26-15 at the intermission and
led by as many as 12 in the early moments of the second half.
Two of Grace's three triples bookended a 20-7 stretch that
spanned six minutes and gave the Green Terror a 37-36 edge with
9:19 to play.
Neither team led by more than three until a Pamela
Costello basket-and-foul play with 3:11 on the clock gave
Swarthmore a 47-43 advantage.
Treys from Grace and Moreland sandwiched around a Stockbower
layup evened the game at 49-all with 1:14 to play before the
final-minute victory by the Garnet.
Moreland added a team-high six rebounds to go with four assists
and three steals. Fischer chipped in with eight points, five
assists and three steals.
McDaniel, which has dropped six of its last seven games dating
back to last season, returns to action in search of preventing its
first 0-5 start since 1977-78 at Dickinson on Thursday. Game time
is 7:30 p.m.
