Glotfelty, Goretsas take titles
GRANTHAM, Pa. - A season after going 37-4, Brock
Glotfelty (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) opened his
junior season 3-0 and the heavyweight title at the 2009 Messiah
Invitational, leading McDaniel in season opening wrestling action
on Saturday.
Glotfelty, the top seed, won his first two matches by fall
before taking the championship bout 4-0 over the No. 2 seed
Deron Sharp of Elizabethtown. Both of Glotfelty's
pins came in the first period.
As a team, the Green Terror finished fourth in the nine-team
field with 67 points. Elizabethtown won the team title with 104
points. Messiah was second with 85.5 and Waynesburg was third with
77 points.
In addition to Glotfelty, McDaniel had three other individuals
finish in the top four, including Tommy Goretsas's
(Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) title at 133.
Goretsas, the No. 3 seed in the bracket, opened is day with a
one of the four byes before taking a 4-1 win over Waynesburg's
Brandon Grainy and a 4-2 sudden-victory win over
the No. 2 seed Marty Harnish (Elizabethtown). In
the title bout, Goretsas downed top-seeded Rico
Borz of Waynesburg, 3-2.
Brent Lowe (Dumfries, Va./Forest Park) added a
runner-up finish at 149. The junior advanced to the championship
match on the strength of three technical falls. The second seed in
the bracket, Lowe feel to the No. 4 seed Conor
McCormick (Ursinus) 6-4 in the first sudden-victory
period.
Will Yeo (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills)
dropped his first match of the day 7-3 before wrestling back to a
fourth-place finish at 184. Yeo notched a 9-6 win in the
consolation bracket and a pair of medical forfeits before falling
in the third-place bout 8-5 to the fourth-seed Tim
Stewart (Messiah), who also defeated Yeo 7-3 earlier in
the day.
Earl Eppard (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne), the
fifth seed at 125, went 3-2 in his debut for the Green Terror while
Michel Tancredi (Wall, N.J./Wall Twp.) also had a
3-2 showing his in debut at 141.
McDaniel returns to action at York (Pa.) on Wednesday. Match
time is 7 p.m.
