Box Score Green Terror rallies for 62-59 victory behind 25 from
Jones
TOWSON, Md. - Miguel Jones (Baltimore, Md./North
County) poured in 19 of his career-high 25 points after
halftime to lead McDaniel to a 62-59 men's basketball victory over
Goucher on the second day of the 2009 Pride of Maryland Tournament
presented by M&T Bank on Saturday.
The Green Terror (1-1) built an 13-point second-half lead before
needing a Jones free throw in the waning seconds of regulation to
force overtime and advance to Sunday's fifth-place game against
Washington (Md.) at 2 p.m.
Kyle Gladden tallied 17 point to lead the
Gophers (0-2), who fell to 1-13 all-time in the state's annual
tournament.
Two Joel Smith free throws staked Goucher to a
55-53 lead 1:13 into the five-minute overtime period before a
Michael Jarboe (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) knotted the
game for the 10th time just 17 seconds later.
Gladden momentarily gave the Gophers a two-point advantage with
3:09 to play but a Jarboe 3-pointer gave McDaniel the lead for good
with 2:49 showing.
Jarboe finished his career-high 16-point outing with a second
triple a minute later to extend the lead to four.
A Woody Butler (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown)
free throw pushed the lead to 62-57 before Shane
Yambor connected on a layup to set the final margin with
20.1 seconds to play.
The first half featured seven ties and eight lead changes with
neither team building a lead of larger than three points.
Jones hit a layup 1:08 into the second half to turn a 24-23
halftime deficit into a 25-24 advantage, sparking a 22-8 run over
the next 6:07 that gave McDaniel its largest advantage at 45-32.
Jones contributed 13 points during the burst, including hitting
three of his four treys.
Two Jarboe free throws with 7:38 on the clock made it a 50-39
game before Yambor hit a 3-pointer that started a 14-2 rally that
gave the hosts a one-point lead with 53.5 seconds on the clock.
Gladden's basket-and-foul capped the stretch.
