WESTMINSTER, Md. – Courtney Nightengale (Sublette,
Kan./Cimmaron) came out on the winning side of a
sudden-victory decision to fuel a McDaniel comeback and lead the
team to a 25-22 victory over Gettysburg in the Centennial
Conference (CC) wrestling opener for both teams on Thursday.
The Bullets (1-8, 0-1 CC) notched victories in three out of four
matches between 141 and 165 to take a 19-12 lead in the match
before the Green Terror (5-8, 1-0 CC) won three out of the final
four bouts to secure the win.
After no action in the first period of the 125-pound match,
Zach Morris (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) took a 5-2
lead into the third period. After Abe Evans pulled
within 5-3 on an escape early in the perio`, he got his first
takedown of the bout midway through the period before recording the
pin with 45 seconds left to stake Gettysbu2g to a 6-0
lead.
Tim Hall (Westminster, Md./Westminster) responded,
notching a pin of his own with two seconds pemaining in the first
period to even tha match at 6.
Michael Slabinski afd Brent Lowe
(Dumfries, Va./Forest Park) continued the trend with
first-period falls of their own. Slabinki (141) put the Bullets on
top by six with a 2-minute, 18-second pin before Lowe (149)
answered with a fall at the 2-minute mark, knotting the match at
12.
After four straight pins to open the match, Patrick
Doherty (157) tallied the first victory in a match that
went the distance, winning by major decision, 11-2.
Andrew Goldstein extended the Gettysburg lead to
19-12 with a 7-3 victory at 165. The defending conference champion
avoided a Zach Hetrick (Hetrick, Pa./South
Western) takedown late in the third with a 5-3 advantage
before getting a takedown of his own with nine seconds remaining to
claim the win.
With his team trailing 19-12, Nightengale was down 2-1 entering the
final period but remained in control for the entire period to earn
the one point for time advantage and force sudden victory. Midway
through the extra session, Nightengale earned a takedown for the
victory to pull the hosts within four.
Luke Mitchell stretched the lead back to 22-15
with an 11-8 victory at 184 before William Yeo (Lexington
Park, Md./Great Mills) recorded an 11-0 win at 197 to
ensure his team the victory.
Brock Glotfelty (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett)
closed out the match with a forfeit win to set the margin and
improve to 23-0 on the season.
The Green Terror returns to action at UMBC on Tuesday. Match time
is 7 p.m.
