WESTMINSTER, Md. – Chad Arrington
(Randallstown, Md./Randallstown) recorded a double-double
with team highs of 17 points and 14 rebounds to pace McDaniel in a
79-72 victory over Washington (Md.) in Centennial Conference (CC)
men's basketball action on Thursday.
The Green Terror (10-3, 5-1 CC), who also got double-figure scoring
from three other players, exploded to a 16-point lead early in the
second half before staving off a rally by the Shoremen (4-9, 1-5
CC) for their sixth straight victory and best 13-game start since
1982-83 (11-2).
Tim Kohlrus netted a game-high 22 points for
Washington, which dropped its sixth consecutive game but only its
second during the stretch by more than four points.
Knotted at 12-all on a Kohlrus three-point play with 13:14 on the
first-half clock, T.J. Odunlami (Columbia,
Md./Atholton) responded 21 seconds later with a basket to
spark an 8-0 burst over the next 3 minutes, 23 seconds to give
McDaniel the lead for good.
A Sal Schittino basket-and-foul closed the
Shoremen deficit to 29-27 with 3:59 showing but Michael
Jarboe (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) hit two free throws on the
other end to re-establish a four-point edge.
James Whall once again trimmed the gap to two but
the Green Terror, behind five points from Odunlami, closed the half
on a 12-2 run to take a 43-31 advantage into the
break.
After a single James Whall free throw 1:41 into the second half,
Miguel Jones (Baltimore, Md./North County) and
Arrington each hit a layups and Josh McKay (Baltimore,
Md./Eastern Tech) converted a single free throw to stretch
the lead to its largest at 48-32 with 16:04 to play.
After an Arrington steal-and-breakaway dunk gave the hosts a 61-46
advantage with 9:55 to play, Washington netted 12 of its next 14
points from the charity stripe, converting each of its attempts and
trimming the deficit to 64-60 with 3:23 in the
process.
Two free throws each from Kohlrus and Alan Kines
over the next two minutes pulled the visitors within four each time
but McDaniel converted seven of its eight attempts from the line
over the final 1:12 and Odunlami closed the game with a fast-break
layup to escape with the seven-point victory.
McKay finished with 15 points for the Green Terror while Jones and
Odunlami contributed 12 and 11, respectively. Jones added four
assists while Jarboe had five steals.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Haverford on Saturday.
