SWARTHMORE, Pa. – All five Swarthmore starters finished in
double figures led by a double-double performance from
Kathryn Stockbower to down McDaniel 82-65 in
Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on
Tuesday.
Ali Moreland (Davidsonville, Md./South River) led
the Green Terror (5-6, 3-3 CC) with 15 points, four assists and
three steals while Ashley Lyles (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent
Pallotti) added 10 points and four steals.
Whitney Snoops (Millersville, Md./Archbishop
Spalding) chipped in 12 points and a team-best eight
rebounds off the bench.
Stockbower finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Garnet
(7-6, 4-2 CC), who also got 15 points apiece from Pamela
Costello, Melissa Grigsby and
Ceylan Bodur. Sarah
Miller-Walfish added 12 points to round out the starting
five.
After two Lyles free throws staked McDaniel to an advantage 31
seconds into the contest, Grisby hit a 3-pointer nearly 50 seconds
later to spark an 18-6 run over the next 4:30 to give Swarthmore a
lead it would not relinquish.
Bodur hit the first of her three triples as part of her seven
points during the stretch.
A Lauren Wyble (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park)
jumper with 10:17 remaining in the opening half closed the deficit
to 22-18 but the Garnet got treys from Nicole
Rizzo and Bodur to stretch the lead to double digits for
the first time.
A 7-0 Green Terror run in the final 1:02 of the stanza closed the
gap to 39-36 at the intermission but Swarthmore countered with 11
of the second half's first 13 points to open up a 12-point
advantage that was never challenged.
The Garnet, despite turning the ball over nine more times than the
Green Terror (24-15) and attempting eight fewer free throws
(34-26), outrebounded the visitors by 10 (43-33) – 35 of
which came on the defensive end.
