SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Louis Sarris-Grau (Huntingdon
Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) tallied a game-high 16 points
and added six blocked shots to lead McDaniel to a 72-55 victory
over Swarthmore in the Centennial Conference (CC) men's
basketball opener for both teams on Wednesday.
Kevin Henry (Potomac, Md./Bullis School) added 11
points for the Green Terror (4-1, 1-0 CC) while T.J.
Odunlami (Columbia, Md./Atholton) reached double figures
for the fourth straight game with 14 points.
Raul Ordonez led the Garnet (1-3, 0-1 CC) with 12
points.
Behind baskets from four different players, McDaniel built a 9-0
lead over the first 1:59 to force a Swarthmore
timeout.
Ryan Carmichael drained a 19-foot jump shot on the
ensuing Garnet possession to halt the run before the two teams
combined to miss on their next nine attempts from the floor until
Henryconverted a driving layup to snap the nearly four-minute
drought.
A JJ Houston (Frederick, Md./St. Johns Catholic
Prep) putback and Richard Barry (Floral Park,
N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) jumper stretched the lead to
15-2 with 12:04 remaining in the half.
A Marc Rogalski jumper pulled the hosts within
15-8 with 9:31 on the clock but Ryan Finch (Flemington,
N.J./Hunterdon) converted on the other end to spark an 8-0
run that stretched the lead to 15 just 1 minute, 41 seconds
later.
Holding a 34-22 advantage at the intermission, the Green Terror
opened the second half much the same way as the first half –
with an 8-0 run to force a Swarthmore timeout 2:30 into the
stanza.
Six straight Garnet points countered the McDaniel spurt but
back-to-back 3-pointers from Michael Jarboe (Monrovia,
Md./Urbana) and Finch pushed the lead back to 20 with
14:47 showing.
With his team trailing 63-41 on a Henry 3-pointer with 8:24 to
play, Matt Allen hit a jumper at the other end to
spark a 9-0 run over the next 4:17 to close the gap to
63-50.
A single Sarris-Grau free throw momentarily halted the stretch but
two Danny Walker charity tosses shrunk the deficit
to its smallest of the second half at 64-52 with 3:25 to
play.
The Green Terror tallied eight of the game's final 11 points
to set the final margin.
McDaniel shot 52.8 percent from the floor in the game, including
46.2 percent from behind the arc. Swarthmore was 31.3 percent from
the floor and 1-for-15 from 3-point range.
