STEVENSON, Md. – Louis Sarris-Grau (Huntingdon
Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) netted a game-high 18 points
to lead three McDaniel players in double figures and help give his
team a 75-66 men's basketball victory over Stevenson in the
2008 Provident Pride of Maryland tournament on Saturday.
The Green Terror (2-1), who lost in the opening round for the first
time in the four years of the tournament on Tuesday to be relegated
to the consolation bracket, used a 17-5 run midway through the
second half to turn a three-point advantage into a 67-53 lead with
5:55 to play before withstanding a late flurry from the Mustangs
(0-5) to advance to Sunday's fifth-place game against
Frostburg, who defeated Goucher 64-56 earlier in the
day.
Greg Woody led four Stevenson players in double
figures with 16 points behind a 10-for-10 performance from the
free-throw line.
Trailing 43-41 with 15:05 remaining in the second half,
Chad Arrington (Randallstown,
Md./Randallstown) hit a jumper to even the score and
Kevin Henry (Potomac, Md./Bullis School) hit the
second of two free throws on the next McDaniel possession to give
his team the lead for good.
An Arrington fast-break basket and two Henry free throws capped a
7-0 burst, stretching the lead to 48-43 with 13:31 to
play.
Leading 57-51, Miguel Jones (Baltimore, Md./North
County) drained the second of his two 3-pointers and
Sarris-Grau chipped in four straight points to push the lead to
double figures for the first time.
After a single T.J. Odunlami (Columbia,
Md./Atholton) free throw gave the Green Terror its largest
lead at 67-53, Kerry Dugan layup sparked a 7-0
rally over the next 2:22 to close the deficit to seven but a
7-for-10 showing from the free-throw line over the final 3:33
helped McDaniel hold on for the victory.
Trailing 9-5 after Ely Richardson hit the first of
two free throws with 14:27 on the first-half clock, Sarris-Grau hit
a layup on the Green Terror's next possession to spark a 13-0
run over a 3-minute, 30-second span. Sarris-Grau, who had six of
his eight first-half points during the burst, also capped the
stretch, finishing a Michael Jarboe (Monrovia,
Md./Urbana) lob pass with a driving layup.
A Dugan layup at the other end off the missed opportunity for a
three-point point, started Stevenson on a 10-2 run of its own,
pulling to within 20-19 with two Woody free throws with 7:57
remaining in the half.
JJ Houston (Frederick, Md./St. Johns Catholic
Prep) converted a jumper from eight feet on the right side
to momentarily stop the momentum.
After an exchange of free throws, Greg Collins hit
a layup and converted the ensuing free throw with 4:46 on the first
half clock to give the Mustangs a 25-24 lead. Collins extended the
lead to 27-24 just 11 seconds later off a Darryl
Fleming lob.
Trailing 31-28 with 48.6 seconds on the clock, Arringtonconverted a
three-point play to even the game at halftime.
Sarris-Grau added a team-best eight rebounds and two steals to his
18 points while Arrington chipped in 15 points and six boards.
Odunlami added 13 points.
