SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Samantha Jansson
tallied 15 points to lead Susquehanna to a 78-68 victory over
McDaniel in the championship game of the 2008 Pepsi/Weis Markets
Tip-Off Tournament in non-conference women's basketball
action on Sunday.
The Crusaders (5-0) also got 15 points from Jennifer
Butts while Rachael Hughes chipped in 13
to help rally the squad from a 33-32 halftime deficit to the
10-point win.
Ali Moreland (Davidsonville, Md./South River)
netted a game-high 19 to go with three rebounds, four assists and
four steals for the Green Terror (1-1) to earn a spot on the
all-tournament team. Ashley Lyles (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent
Pallotti) added eight points and seven rebounds to join
Moreland on the all-tournament team.
Trailing 35-32 off a Moreland jumper 34 seconds into the second
half, Hughes hit back-to-back jumpers and Erika
Barron drained a 3-pointer to account for a 7-0 run over a
1-minute, 17-second span.
Moreland trimmed the deficit to 42-41 with 14:35 to play but Barron
answered with another trey to re-establish the four-point
lead.
Snoops made it a 45-43 game before Susquehanna reeled off the next
six points to stretch the lead to 51-43 with 11:35 on the
clock.
A Catherine Mills (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) triple
from the wing trimmed the deficit to 53-48 with 10:10 showing but
the Crusaders responded with a 12-5 to push the lead to its largest
point at 65-53 nearly five and a half minutes later.
A Sally Grace (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales
Academy) 3-pointer in the corner made it a 69-64 game with
1:23 on the clock but Susquehanna converted nine of its 10 free
throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Behind four points from Lyles, the Green Terror opened the game on
a 4-0 run.
A Jansson layup pulled Susquehanna within 8-6 but five points from
Moreland and a Grace layup stretched the lead to 15-8 with 13:31 to
play in the first half.
Trailing 19-12, the Crusaders tallied nine of the game's next
11 points to knot the game for the first time at
21-all.
Even at 29-all, Hughes hit the first of two free throws and Butts
converted a jumper to give the hosts a 32-29 lead but Lyles and
Lauren Wyble (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) each
hit jumpers to give McDaniel a one-point edge at
halftime.
Mills finished with 11 points while Snoops chipped in nine points
and nine rebounds.
The Green Terror returns to action at Lebanon Valley on Tuesday.
