SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Sally Grace (Catonsville,
Md./Mount de Sales Academy) netted a team-high 12 points
to lead McDaniel to a 65-30 victory over Rutgers-Newark in the
first round of the Pepsi/Weis Markets Tip-Off Tournament at
Susquehanna in non-conference women's basketball action on
Saturday.
In its season opener, all 15 players dressed for the game
registered at least one point to lead the Green Terror (1-0) into
Sunday's championship game against the winner of
Saturday's second semifinal between Susquehanna and Alfred.
Bimpe Fageyinbo led the Scarlet Raiders (0-3) with
seven points.
Trailing 5-0 nearly three minutes into the game, Grace hit a short
jumper to put McDaniel on the scoreboard. Meredith Larsen
(Phoenix, Md./Bryn Mawr) hit a putback nearly two minutes
later to pull the Green Terror within 5-4 before Courtney
Vbacca stretched the lead back to three at the 14:49
mark.
Whitney Snoops (Millersville, Md./Archbishop
Spalding) hit the second of two free throws with 12:40 on
the clock and Grace nailed the first of her two 3-pointers in the
left corner to give McDaniel the lead for good ad spark a 9-0 run
over a 2-minute, 47-second span.
Clinging to a 24-17 lead at halftime, the Green Terror got eight
points in the first 1:48 of the second half and exploded for 26 of
the half's first 28 points to take a 50-19 lead with 8:42 to
play.
Grace added two assists and two steals to her 12 points.
Ali Moreland (Davidsonville, Md./South River)
added a solid all-around game with six points, four rebounds, four
assists and three steals.
Ashley Lyles (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti)
chipped in seven points and three steals while Emma Adams
(Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) debuted with two points, three
rebounds and a team-high four steals. Snoops finished with five
points and six rebounds while freshman Kara Smith
(Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) tallied six
points.
As a team, McDaniel finished with 15 assists on 22 baskets and
forced 35 turnovers. The squad grabbed 19 steals.
Sunday's championship game time is 3 p.m.
