Avery Newport

Newport begins his first year at McDaniel in 2024-25 with over eight years of experience in sports media.

A Maryland native, Newport received his master’s degree in broadcast journalism in December 2023 from the University of Maryland, College Park where he worked for WMUC Sports and the Maryland Baseball Network. He provided play-by-play and color commentary for football, men’s basketball, men’s lacrosse, field hockey, baseball and softball, oversaw internet streaming, hosted pregame shows and conducted player and coach interviews. He also served as the color analyst for the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship games hosted by Maryland on Big Ten Plus.

Newport spent his final semester as a reporter and anchor for the student-run news organization, Capital News Service. He wrote and anchored multiple sports segments and anchored the news desk for web-streamed newscasts.

After receiving his master's degree, Newport did play-by-play for volleyball and women’s lacrosse for the Loyola (MD) Greyhounds on ESPN+ and called multiple events for Next Level Sports & Entertainment, including the PALA Sixes Cup lacrosse tournament, National High School Hoops Festival, and the third season of the Next Collegiate League (NCL) sixes lacrosse league.

Newport received his his bachelor’s degree in Recreation and Sports Studies with a concentration in Sport Communication from Shepherd University in May 2022. He called play-by-play for men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, women’s lacrosse and volleyball and oversaw all aspects of broadcast production, including the assembly, production and training for athletics' live video broadcasts.

Newport also spent three years as a broadcaster and producer for Talk Radio WRNR & TV10 covering college and high school sports in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. He handled live play-by-play and color commentary as well as on-site and in-studio producing. He also produced the station’s morning talk show,  “Eastern Panhandle Talk," co-hosted the daily sports talk radio show, “The Sports Mix," and contributed to broadcasts as a sideline reporter and camera operator.

In addition, Newport has created short videos on sports history topics, including the history of the Super Bowl and the NBA Finals that have reached thousands of users and amassed over four million views on Instagram and TikTok.
