Matt Johnson

Johnson begins his first season as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at McDaniel in 2022. He comes to The Hill after serving as the offensive coordinator Seabreeze High School in Ormond Beach, Fla.

Under Johnson, Seabreeze averaged 30 points per game en route to a 6-4 record in 2021 while winning its first district championship since 2007. Quarterback Blake Boda earned all-area and all-state honors after throwing for 2,021 yards and 18 touchdowns with only four interceptions.

From 2017-19, Johnson served as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at Flagler Palm Coast High School in Palm Coast, Fla. During his three seasons, the Bulldogs posted a 24-5 record with three consecutive Class 8A Region 1 playoff appearances while averaging 30 points per game. In 2017, the team posted the best season in school history with an undefeated regular season (9-0) en route to winning the district championship.

Johnson also spent one season as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at Fort Pierce Westwood High School in Fort Pierce, Fla.

A 2011 graduate of Bethune-Cookman University, Johnson had two different stints as the quarterbacks coach at his alma mater in 2012 and 2015. After helping lead the Wildcats to a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championship in 2012, he returned in 2015 to mentor Quentin Williams who finished the regular season ranked first in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) in passing efficiency (187.2) and third in passing yards per completion (16.45). He also led the league in total offense and earned All-MEAC First Team honors.

Johnson played in 30 games at Bethune-Cookman from 2007-10, completing 62 percent of his passes for 3,283 yards and 18 touchdowns. A dual-threat quarterback, he also rushed for 1,040 yards and eight touchdowns while amassing 4,323 yards otf total offense.

In 2010, Johnson led the Wildcats to a program-best 10-2 record and a share of the 2010 MEAC championship as a senior. He racked up 2,753 yards in total offense, throwing for 2,053 and 14 touchdowns while running for another 700 yards and seven scores en route to earning the Alonzo S. "Jake" Gaither Award as the nation's top HBCU football player. He was also named National Player of the Year by Heritage Sports Radio Network (HSRN). The MEAC Offensive Player of the Year ranked second in the FCS in passing efficiency (155.7) and 20th in total offense (250.3).

After graduating with a bachelor's degree in business administration, Johnson spent two seasons in the Canadian Football League (CFL) with the British Columbia Lions (2011) and Saskatchewan Roughriders (2012).
