Emergency Action Plan

Recommended Emergency Procedure

  1. Check the scene for safety. Is it safe to assist?
  2. Check for life threatening conditions (unconsciousness; no breathing or breathing trouble; no signs of life; severe bleeding)
    • If there is an adult down, it is typically cardiac.
    • If a child is down, it is typically breathing.
  3. DO NOT attempt to move if the following suspected injury has occurred (head or neck injury; respiratory; cardiac; vascular emergency).
  4. Call 911.
  5. If possible, call Campus Safety (410-857-2202). The Carroll County emergency scanner will be heard by McDaniel College Campus Safety
  6. Until Campus Safety arrives:
    • Monitor airway, breathing, and circulation.
    • Treat for shock (limit movement/stabilize, maintain body temperature, give NOTHING by mouth)
    • Obtain the following
      • SAMPLE: Signs and symptoms, Allergies, Medications, Past medical history, Last food or drink, Event
      • Maintain control of the situation
  7. Heat related stress/illness
    • Non-life threatening events (heat: cramps, syncope, exhaustion)
      • Remove the athlete from the environment immediately
      • Remove equipment and/or clothing while maintaining modest
      • Place athlete in cool environment (AC room)
      • Apply ice to axilla (arm pits) and groin if necessary
    • Life threatening event (heat stroke). While remaining in outside environment while awaiting EMS arrival
      • Decrease body temperature
      • Remove equipment and/or clothing while maintaining modesty
      • Place athlete in ice/water trough
      • Monitor vital signs, once 102 deg rectal temperature is achieved, remove from tub, then transport.
  8. Practice/event is suspended until athlete is transported, emergency is resolved, and an athletic trainer/sports medicine staff is on site to oversee the remainder of the practice/competition.
  9. Any condition that renders the individual unable to make a decision requires a call to Campus Safety.
