Softball Opens Home Schedule with Split vs. Stevenson

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The McDaniel College softball team split a doubleheader with Stevenson on Wednesday to open the team's home schedule at the Softball Park.

Game 1: McDaniel 14, Stevenson 5

The Green Terror (2-4) scored 14 runs in the first four innings to win the opener via run rule.

A bases-loaded walk scored first-year Gianna Apostolakos before two more runs came across when sophomore Ally McBride scored on a fielder's choice and junior Keonna Gonzalez scored on a sacrifice fly.

The Mustangs (1-1) responded with two runs in the second inning with two runs to cut the deficit to one, but McDaniel answered with five runs in the bottom half to make the score 8-2.

A two-run double from McBride scored first-year Erin Thayer and junior Riley Jackson before Gonzalez followed with an RBI-double to score McBride. Senior Taylor Applefeld scored Gonzalez on an RBI-single and Applefeld later scored following an error.

McDaniel added four more runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run single from junior Caitlin Boden, and two more in the fourth for 14 total runs across four innings. 

Four players finished with multiple RBIs in the win, highlighted by three from Boden. Apostolakos had a 3-for-3 day with three runs scored while McBride went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Applefeld and sophomore Cameron Kelly each added two RBIs while Jackson had two hits in three at-bats.

Kelly earned the win in the circle, pitching 3.2 innings and striking out two batters while walking six and allowing two earned runs. Junior Amy Anderson threw 19 pitches in relief.

Game 2: Stevenson 4, McDaniel 2

The second game remained scoreless until the fourth when senior Ryan Smith scored on an RBI-single from Applefeld. The Green Terror added a second run in the frame on a sacrifice fly to score Kelly.

Stevenson scored four runs in the fifth and sixth innings for the game's final 4-2 tally. An RBI-single put the Mustangs on the board in the ffith and three runs scored in the sixth following a fielding error. A 1-2-3 inning in the seventh sealed the win for the visitors and a split in the doubleheader.

Applefeld finished the late game 2-for-3 from the dish with an RBI while Apostolakos, Kelly and Gonzalez each finished with a base hit. McBride took the loss in the circle, pitching a complete game and totaling six strikeouts, four walks, five hits and one earned run.

The Green Terror head to Clermont, Fla. to paticipate in The Spring Games. The team will face William Paterson and Wisconsin-Stout on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
