Strong Pitching Leads Gettysburg to Sweep Over Softball

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Junior Bella Sylvester totaled four hits as the McDaniel College softball team dropped a Centennial Conference doubleheader against Gettysburg Thursday at the Softball Park.

The Green Terror (11-19, 3-7 CC) were limited to just two runs on 13 hits over 14 innings. Paige Forry and Nikki Caesar combined for 20 strikeouts for the visitors while Forry earned the win in the opener and the save in game two.

Sylvester went 4-for-7 with a run while senior Makayla Calamita was 3-for-7 with one RBI. Senior Mandy Butz went 2-for-6 with two walks and one run.

Gettysburg 7, McDaniel 0

The Bullets (19-9, 6-4 CC) held a slim one-run lead through three innings after scoring on a sacrifice fly in the top of the first.

Holding a one-run lead, Forry worked her way out of a bases loaded jam with no outs in the bottom of the inning after back-to-back singles by Butz and Sylvester before Calamita reached on a fielder's choice. However, a line out double play and strikeout over the next two at-bats ended the threat.

Gettysburg scored three unearned runs in the top of the fourth, highlighted by a two-run double by Emily Bakker before adding another unearned run in the fifth.

Leading 5-0, the Bullets provided the final margin on a two-run home run to right center by Lauren O'Leary in the top of the seventh.

Forry, the 2023 Centennial Conference Pitcher of the Year, totaled nine strikeouts and allowed just five hits over 7.0 innings.

Freshman Anna Putnam had two of the five hits for the Green Terror, going 2-for-3.

Junior Hannah Costa took the loss despite allowing just three earned runs and eight hits over 7.0 innings. She also walked four.

Gettysburg 9, McDaniel 2

The Green Terror struck first in game two, this time, scoring off a strong start in the bottom of the first where they totaled three hits and a stolen base, taking the lead on an RBI-single by Calamita.

McDaniel maintained its 1-0 lead through two before the Bullets took the lead with two runs in the top of the third. An RBI-double by Julia Smith and RBI-single by Allegra DeCandia jump started nine unanswered runs for the visitors who led 9-1 headed into the bottom of the fifth.

As was the case in the opener, unearned runs were an issue for the Green Terror as they allowed five, including three in the fourth and two in the fifth.

Needing a run to stay alive, Butz scored from second with two outs on an RBI-single to third by senior Paytyn Hazelton to keep the game going.

However, despite putting runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the seventh, McDaniel could not drive another run across and dropped its third-straight game at home.

Caesar surrendered just one run on four hits over 4.0 innings while striking out seven to remain unbeaten in three decisions this season before giving way to Forry in the fifth to picked up her fourth save after scattering four hits and striking out four over the final 3.0 innings.

Sylvester went 3-for-4 with a run while Calamita was 2-for-4 with one RBI.

The Green Terror continue their 12-game home stand on Saturday when they host Swarthmore on Senior Day. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
